Background Adolescent substance use disorder is a pressing public health issue, with increasing prevalence as individuals age. Social media platforms like Reddit (Reddit Inc) serve significant venues for teenagers to discuss and navigate use. platforms, such Reddit, increasingly important spaces where discuss, share, their experiences use, presenting unique opportunities challenges understanding addressing this issue. Objective This study aims explore how frame substance-use discussions on the r/teenagers subreddit, focusing personal interpretations, causal attributions, social psychological contexts that shape these online support groups. By identifying interpretive frames, we aimed better understand complex drivers of adolescent behavior potential interventions. Methods Using natural language processing techniques, analyzed 32,674 use–related posts from 2018 2022. A framing approach was used identify categorize prevalent themes, supplemented by emotional profiling using EmoLLaMA-chat-13B model developed Liu colleagues. Results In total, 7 primary frames emerged: normalization, risk awareness, integration, autonomy rebellion, coping mechanisms, influence, stigmatization. These varied in were associated distinct profiles, highlighting interplay between experiences. We observed that, example, normalization often mix sadness anxiety, while exhibited elevated levels anger, sadness, anxiety. distinctive landscapes each reveal insights into mental state adolescents navigating Conclusions The findings underscore multifaceted nature media. There is a growing body of literature exploring the types substance-related content and their portrayals on various social media platforms. We aimed to summarize how related substances portrayed platforms. This systematic review was pre-registered PROSPERO (ref: CRD42021291853). A comprehensive search conducted in databases PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO Web Science April 2021. Original qualitative studies published post-2004 that included thematic sentiment analyses tobacco, alcohol, psychostimulant, e-cigarette, cannabis, opiate, stimulant/amphetamine, inhalant novel psychoactive substance were included. Social platforms defined as online web- or application-based allowed users generate interact via 'liking', comment messaging features. Only summative and/or included.A total 73 studies, which covered 15 905 182 posts Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok Weibo, identified. 76.3% all positive its depiction use, with 20.2% depicting use negatively. Sentiment regarding opiate however commonly negative (55.5%). Most identified themes relating Health, Safety Harms (65.0%) use. Oklahoma has a fast-growing medical cannabis industry, showing proliferation of industry marketing. While marketing exposure (CME) is risk factor for use and positive attitudes about use, no studies have examined the impact CME on behavior in permissive policy environment, like Oklahoma.N = 5428 adults ages 18 older completed assessments demographics, past 30-day to each four types marketing: outdoor (billboards, signs), social media, print (magazines), Internet. Regression models associations with towards harm perceptions, interest obtaining license (among nonlicensed participants), use.Three quarters (74.5%) reported any CME. Outdoor was most prevalent (61.1%), followed by media (46.5%), Internet (46.1%), (35.2%). Correlates included younger age, higher educational attainment income, license. In adjusted regression models, number sources were associated current behavior, cannabis, lower greater Similar between shown among noncannabis users.Public health messaging should be employed minimize potential adverse impacts CME.No correlates rapidly growing relatively unrestrained environment.

Recent evidence suggests it has significant potential for both industry health promoters influence public behaviours. This protocol describes a standardised, replicable process investigations that can be tailored various areas of research interest, allowing comparison content features across topics. first 50 appearing videos in each five relevant hashtags are sampled analysis. Utilising codebook with detailed definitions, engagement metadata variables applicable any area is captured, including an assessment the video’s overall sentiment (positive, negative, neutral). Additional specific coding developed provide targeted information about posted within selected hashtags. Social media is an important information source for a growing subset of the population and can likely be leveraged to provide insight into evolving drug overdose epidemic. Twitter valuable trends, colloquial available potential users, how networks interactivity might influence what people are exposed they engage in communication around use. This exploratory study was designed investigate ways which unsupervised machine learning analyses using natural language processing could identify coherent themes tweets containing substance names. This involved harnessing data from Twitter, including large-scale collection brand name (N=262,607) street (N=204,068) prescription drug-related use (ie, processing) collected with visualization pertinent tweet themes. Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) coherence score calculations performed compare (eg, OxyContin) oxys) tweets. We found discussed differently depending on whether or used. Brand categories often contained political talking points border, crime, handling ongoing mitigation strategies). In contrast, names occasionally referenced misuse, though multiple social uses term Sonata) muddled topic clarity.Content corpus reflected discussion about itself less personal use. However, content notably more diverse resisted simple LDA categorization. We speculate this may reflect effective slang terminology clandestinely discuss activity. If so, straightforward digital difficult than previously assumed. This work has used surveillance detection harmful information. It also appropriate education dissemination persons engaged Twitter.

Social media have drastically changed the context of adolescent development. To date, majority research investigating effects these changes has measured time spent on social media, yielding inconclusive results—likely because this approach conceptualizes as a monolith. experiences are complex and diverse, adolescents themselves. Background: TikTok has become a significant influence on public health perceptions, especially regarding ADHD. With its expansive reach among younger demographics, content the potential to shape understanding and behaviors related ADHD treatment. This study analyzed how prescription stimulants are depicted assess of these portrayals stimulant medication demand. Methods: We employed snowball sampling strategy collect 1,000 videos stimulants. A systematic analysis was conducted refined dataset 548 videos, identifying primary categories portrayals. Results: The which predominantly featured young adults, mainly white female, amassed an average over 300,000 views per video. Our uncovered four categories: Positive Effects, Negative Context Use, Systemic Challenges. Videos frequently substantial improvements in daily functionality emotional well-being attributed stimulants, with side effects presented as manageable. context use highlighted broad applications medications life, while systemic challenges focused issues such healthcare barriers, shortages, stigma. Conclusion: users’ portrayal were positive, emphasizing improved lifestyles, may demand similar direct-to-consumer advertising, particularly women. depiction barriers underscores complexity accessing treatment, disproportionately affect individuals impact treatment adherence, warranting further research into audience reception this content.

Abstract A vast amount of media‐related text data is generated daily in the form social media posts, news stories or academic articles. These provide opportunities for researchers to analyse and understand how substance‐related issues are being discussed. The main methods large (content analyses specifically trained deep‐learning models) require substantial manual annotation resources. machine‐learning approach called ‘zero‐shot learning’ may be quicker, more flexible fewer Zero‐shot learning uses models on large, unlabelled (or weakly labelled) sets classify previously unseen into categories which model has not been trained. This means that a pre‐existing zero‐shot can used without need task‐specific training. particularly important analysing time critical. article describes relatively new concept it applied substance use research, including brief practical tutorial.
