White matter dysmaturation is commonly seen in preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Animal research has shown that active sleep essential for early brain plasticity. This study aimed determine potential of as an predictor subsequent white development infants. Using heart and respiratory rates routinely monitored NICU, we developed a machine learning-based automated stage classifier cohort 25 (12 females). The was subsequently applied 58 (31 females) extract percentage over 5–7 consecutive days during 29–32 weeks postmenstrual age. Each underwent high-quality T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging at term-equivalent age, which used measure total volume. association between volume examined using multiple linear regression model adjusted confounders. with superior classification performance [mean area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) = 0.87, 95% CI 0.83–0.92], found higher period significantly associated increased age [ β 0.31, 0.09–0.53, false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted p -value 0.021]. Our results extend positive animal human emphasize benefit preservation NICU setting.

Abstract Healthy sleep supports robust development of the brain and behavior. Modern society presents a host challenges that can impair disrupt critical circadian rhythms reinforce optimal physiological functioning, including proper timing consolidation sleep. While acute effects inadequate disrupted are being defined, adverse developmental consequences understudied. Here, we exposed mice to disrupting light–dark cycles from birth until weaning demonstrate such exposure has impacts on behavior as adults. Mice experience early-life disruption exhibit more anxiety-like in elevated plus maze, poorer spatial memory Morris Water Maze, impaired working delayed match-to-sample task. Additionally, neuron morphology amygdala, hippocampus prefrontal cortex is adversely impacted. Pyramidal cells these areas had smaller dendritic fields, pyramidal also exhibited diminished branching orders. Disrupted were hyperactive adults, but otherwise no alteration adult locomotor rhythms. These results highlight early life may have long lasting far-reaching for brain.

The relationship between sleep and epilepsy is bidirectional. Certain syndromes predominantly or exclusively manifest during sleep, with seizures frequently originating from non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Interictal epileptiform discharges observed on electroencephalograms are most likely to be activated the deep NREM stage known as N3. Conversely, discharges, anti-seizure medications (ASMs), well other therapies can exert detrimental effects architecture. Moreover, co-occurrence of disorders has potential exacerbate seizure control. Understating crucial for healthcare providers. Addressing managing sleep-related problems in individuals potentially contribute improved control overall well-being. At same time, improving improve quality quantity, thus further health epilepsy.

Abstract Aims The objective of this study is to explore the various latent categories within sleep quality night shift nurses and investigate whether shift‐related factors predispose higher levels occupational stress anxiety. Design This a cross‐sectional study. Methods From November December 2020, registered from 18 tertiary hospitals 16 secondary in Chongqing were selected through convenience sampling for Latent class analysis was used working shifts. Furthermore, univariate logistic multivariate utilized identify contributing Results four Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index identified as ‘Low Disorder Group’ (56.34%), ‘Moderate (37.27%), ‘High Non‐Reliant on Sleeping medication (4.89%) Reliant (1.50%). results showed that having night‐shift frequency 3–4 times per month, durations 9–12 h, time delay after (≥2 h), total less than 4 h increased Conclusion demonstrates heterogeneity can be classified into categories. Higher shifts, extended work hours insufficient rest are all associated with Impact By identifying among nurses, sheds light relationship between patterns These findings have important implications healthcare institutions management nurse well‐being schedules. Unobtrusive monitoring of sleep and disorders in children presents challenges. We investigated the possibility using Ultra-Wide band (UWB) radar to measure children.Thirty-two scheduled undergo a clinical polysomnography participated; their ages ranged from 2 months 14 years. During polysomnography, children's body movements breathing rate were measured by an UWB-radar. A total 38 features calculated motion signals obtained raw signals. Adaptive boosting was used as machine learning classifier estimate stages, with gold standard method for comparison.Data all participants combined, this study achieved Cohen's Kappa coefficient 0.67 overall accuracy 89.8% wake classification, 0.47 72.9% wake, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, non-REM 0.43 58.0% REM light deep classification.Although current performance is not sufficient use yet, UWB promising non-contact analysis children.

Cardiorespiratory activity is highly associated with infants' sleep duration and quality. We performed a systematic literature search of PubMed EMBASE databases to investigate if how cardiorespiratory parameters can be used for state classification in preterm infants what way maturation influences this relation. All retrieved citations were screened against predetermined inclusion exclusion criteria. Only studies (<37 wk postmenstrual age during classification) admitted neonatal ward whom at least one parameter was measured, included. Two researchers independently reviewed the included on methodological Of 1097 initially studies, 23 analysis. Heart rate respiration frequency are strongly correlated active quiet sleep. In sleep, as compared respiratory more stable, heart lower less variable. This association, however, differed across birth subtypes (i.e., extremely, very or late preterm), indicating that – form both gestational postnatal characteristics states. The knowledge gained from review help improve behavioral automated algorithms infants.

Exposure to environmental adversities during early brain development, such as preterm birth, can affect organization. Here, we studied whether development of cortical activity networks in infants may be improved by a multimodal enrichment via bedside facilitation mother-infant emotional connection. We examined functional cortico-cortical connectivity at term age using high-density electroencephalography recordings participating randomized controlled trial Family Nurture Intervention (FNI). Our results identify several large-scale, frequency-specific network effects FNI, most extensively the alpha frequency fronto-central regions. The strength this was correlated later neurocognitive performance, and it comparable healthy term-born rather than receiving standard care. These findings suggest that neurodevelopmental care biologically driven enrichment, direct human

Functional brain networks are assessed differently earlier versus later in development: infants almost universally scanned asleep, whereas adults typically awake. Observed differences between infant and adult functional may thus reflect differing states of consciousness rather than or addition to developmental changes. We explore this question by comparing magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans during natural sleep awake movie-watching. As a reference, we also rest Whole-brain connectivity was more similar within the same state (sleep movie infants; adults) compared with across states. Indeed, classifier trained on patterns robustly decoded even generalized adults; interestingly, did not generalize as well infants. Moreover, overall similarity modulated (stronger for rest) but (same movie). Nevertheless, connections that drove similarity, particularly frontoparietal control network, were state. In sum, differs states, highlighting value fMRI studying over development.
