Abstract For centuries, paleontologists have sought functional explanations for the uniquely complex internal walls (septa) of ammonoids, extinct shelled cephalopods. Ammonoid septa developed increasingly fractal margins, unlike any modern shell morphologies, throughout more than 300 million years evolution. Some suggested these morphologies provided increased resistance to shell-crushing predators. We perform first physical compression experiments on model ammonoid using controlled, theoretical generated by computer-aided design and 3D printing. These biomechanical reveal that increasing complexity septal margins does not increase resistance. Our results raise question whether evolution shape may be tied closely placement siphuncle foramen (anatomic hole). tests demonstrate weakness in centers uniformly thick septa, supporting work suggesting reinforcement thickening at center septa. highlight importance reconstruction idealized permit testing long-held hypotheses evolutionary drivers recreating once rendered physically untestable fossil record.

ABSTRACT Tradeoffs are a fundamental aspect of evolution, such that organismal morphologies often reflect combination developmental constraints and functional requirements. The net result is striking variety allocation strategies—where how resources shunted into aspects the body plan to meet these competing demands. bivalve shell records animal's strategies as relative investment in carbonate valves internal soft parts, generally reflected by volume cavity. can be further partitioned among different components shell, including sculptural elements thought evolve partly under ecological controls. Assuming there general limits energy acquisition, individuals may show allocations between volumes inner cavity possibly for sculpture. Using 3D scans 385 representing 339 extant marine species occurring Florida Keys, USA, we find but tradeoffs construction uncommon. Instead, with relatively high their thickness also have prominent sculpture, suggesting structural relationship. Neither outer mineralogy nor microstructure appears partition tradeoff space, varied pathways fabrication both convergent divergent forms. Framing new morphological physiological analyses bivalves recorded well-fossilized shells opens opportunities understanding an under-studied, macroevolutionary dynamic: shaped class's 500 million-year evolutionary history.

Abstract. Wahyudi ND, Hidayati D, Arbi UY, Ismail A. 2023. Morphometric study of Lola Rochia nilotica (Linnaeus 1767) shells from natural harvest found in Indonesian. Biodiversitas 24: 4711-4722. The population or snails is declining due to shell exploitation for industry, which requires monitoring. government has implemented a policy determine R. regulated on restricted basis depending the number (quota) and size (diameter) with standard width 80 cm. Based morphometric compositions trends shells, this aimed map potential trade Indonesia using percentage calculated data, including Sumatra, Sulawesi, Maluku-East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Papua. analysis was carried out caliper parameters length, width, weight, data distribution morphometrics descriptive statistics. results revealed fluctuating yearly data. The study of prey-predator interactions between land snails and birds offers important insights into evolutionary ecological relationships. Here, we report a case rock anvils presumably used by the Myophonuscaeruleus Enicurusruficapillus in cave cavity limestone hill Malaysia. We did not detect any other species plots and, therefore, based on our short duration, cannot rule out possibility that species, such as mammals, preyed snails. predated shell remains four namely, Hemiplecta sp., Cyclophorusperdixperdix, Amphidromusatricallosusperakensis Cyclophorussemisulcatus, were found around nine plots. Finally, discussed potential limitations using for behavioural, studies their predators.

Abstract Aim Geographic variation in metabolic resources necessary for functional trait expression can set limits on species distributions. For that need to produce and maintain biomineralized traits survival, spatial mineral macronutrients may constrain distributions by limiting the of traits. Here, we examine whether Oreohelix land snails express heavily shell ornaments are restricted CaCO 3 rock regions, if they incorporate greater amounts carbon their than less smooth forms, ornamentation increases strength. Location Western United States. Taxon snails. Methods We used random forest classification models at multiple resolutions evaluate contribution topographic, vegetation, climate, geologic variables predicting presence across range . then measured compared biometric variables, 14 C/ 12 C ratios, peak force fracture ornamented forms from calcareous non‐calcareous substrates. Results Distance was most important variable all closer proximity associated with probability local classification. Pairwise comparisons ratios closely occurring vs. population pairs revealed forms. Ornamented types this study were generally heavier required except when comparing sampled rock. Main Conclusions Biomineralization expression, distribution, function appear be constrained supply a highly diverse group This trait‐environment relationship provides basis future investigations macronutrient constraints form distribution other terrestrial molluscs has direct impact management species.
