Bird nests are essential structures that directly determine the fitness of an organism. While there is theory and evidence predicting association between species nest traits their habitat, few studies have comprehensively examined macroevolutionary patterns driving evolution, niche interrelation. Using information on 3174 songbirds, we show build domed (i.e. with a roof) smaller ranges, narrower thermal niches, less likely to colonise urban environments potentially higher extinction rates compared open nests. Moreover, these could be driven by energetic demands when building nests, which consumes more time might restrict breeding opportunities. These diverse strands suggest transition from in passerines represents important evolutionary innovation behind success largest radiation birds.

Rates of species formation vary widely across the tree life and contribute to massive disparities in richness among clades. This variation can emerge from differences metapopulation-level processes that affect rates at which lineages diverge, persist, evolve reproductive barriers ecological differentiation. For example, populations quickly should form new faster than acquire more slowly. expectation implicitly links microevolutionary (the evolution populations) macroevolutionary patterns profound disparity speciation rate taxa). Here, leveraging extensive field sampling Neotropical Cerrado biome a biogeographically controlled natural experiment, we test role an important process-the propensity for population isolation-as control on lizards snakes. By quantifying genomic structure set codistributed taxa with phylogenetically independent rate, show broad-scale are decoupled demographic genetic promote isolates. Population isolation is likely critical stage many taxa, but our results suggest interspecific variability has little influence rates. A central role for sexual isolation in the formation of new species and establishment boundaries has been noticed since Darwin is frequently emphasized modern literature on speciation. However, an objective evaluation when how plays a speciation carried out few taxa. We discuss three approaches assessing importance relative to other reproductive barriers, including evolutionary rate trait differentiation, strength sympatry, long-term persistence diverging forms. First, we evaluate evidence as whether evolves faster than barriers during early stages divergence. Second, available strong or stronger between closely related sympatric species. Finally, consider effect persistence, barriers. highlight challenges our knowledge opportunities improve upon understanding from different phases process.

Nests are essential constructions that determine fitness, yet their structure can vary substantially across bird species. While there is evidence supporting a link between nest architecture and the habitat species occupies, we still ignore what ecological evolutionary processes linked to different types. Using information on 3175 of songbirds, show that-after controlling for latitude body size-species build domed nests (i.e. with roof) have smaller ranges, less likely colonise urban environments potentially higher extinction rates compared open cavity nests. Domed could be costly specialisation, these take more time built, which restrict breeding opportunities. Darwin and others proposed that a species' geographic range size positively influences speciation likelihood, with the relationship potentially dependent on mode of other contributing factors, including setting species traits. Several alternative proposals for influence rate have also been made (e.g. negative or unimodal speciation). To examine Darwin's proposal, we use phylogenetic comparative methods, focusing large Australasian bird clade, honeyeaters (Aves: Meliphagidae).

How and why certain groups become speciose is a key question in evolutionary biology. Novel traits that enable diversification by opening new ecological niches are likely important mechanisms. However, ornamental can also promote up novel sensory thereby creating inter-specific interactions. More specifically, colors may more precise and/or easier species recognition act as innovations increasing the number of species-specific patterns promoting diversification. While influence coloration on well-studied, mechanisms produce those (e.g., pigmentary, nanostructural) less so, even though ontogeny evolution these differ. We estimated phylogenetic tree for 121 sunbird combined color data 106 with range tools to test hypothesis increases sunbirds, one most colorful bird clades. Results suggest that: (1) expands visual niche, achievable colors, (2) structural diverges readily across body than pigment-based coloration, enabling an increase complexity, (3) might minimize trade-offs between natural sexual selection such function both camouflage conspicuous signal, (4) despite being mobile, only melanin-based positively correlated net Together, findings explain distances sympatric species, packing space predicts otherwise.

Speciation is a complex process that can unfold in many different ways. researchers sometimes simplify core principles their writing way implies misconceptions about the speciation process. While we think these are usually inadvertently implied (and not actively believed) by researchers, they nonetheless risk warping how external readers understand speciation. Here highlight six of especially widespread. First, species to be clearly and consistently defined entities nature, whereas reality boundaries often fuzzy semipermeable. Second, 'good', which two-fold problematic because it both evolution has goal universally increases chances lineage persistence. Third, species-poor clades with species-rich sister considered 'primitive' or 'basal', falsely implying ladder progress. Fourth, assumed strictly tree-like, but genomic findings show widespread hybridization more consistent network-like evolution. Fifth, lack association between trait elevated rates macroevolutionary studies interpreted as evidence against its relevance speciation-even if microevolutionary case relevant. Sixth, obvious differences too readily (i) barriers reproduction, (ii) stepping-stone inevitable speciation, (iii) reflective species' whole divergence history. In conclusion, call for caution, particularly when communicating science, miscommunication ideas provides fertile ground spread.

Abstract Our understanding of the evolution social mating systems is largely based on an atemporal ecological framework, whereas macroevolutionary and phylogenetic perspectives looking at causes variation are less developed. Here, we present analyses in birds unprecedented scale, including 66% world’s using trait-dependent speciation extinction models. We found that lekking (no bond between sexes) very rarely lost, accordance with hypothesis a male shifting to investing one rather than multiple mates would suffer severe fitness cost. In contrast, resource-defense polygamous lineages (with weak, transient socio-sexual bond) frequently revert back monogamy (strong, durable have elevated fraction. tentatively attribute this impossibility females settling optimal parental care strategy under system. Finally, most gains been directly from through intermediate stage polygamy.
