The ecosystem services can be divided using two major classification systems, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) and Common International Classification of Services (CICES). In MEA system, are into four service clusters: supporting, provisioning, regulating, cultural. On other hand, CICES system regards “MEA supporting services” as organism natural function (and not an service). Thus, this is basis for all three (provisioning, cultural) provided by one organism. Abstract Blooms of microalgal red tides and macroalgae (e.g., green golden caused by Ulva Sargassum ) have widespread problems around China in recent years, but there is uncertainty what triggers these blooms how they interact. Here, we use 30 years monitoring data to help answer questions, focusing on the four main species microalgae Prorocentrum donghaiense , Karenia mikimotoi Noctiluca scintillans Skeletonema costatum associated with region. The frequency increased from 1991 2003 then decreased until 2020, S. exhibiting highest rate decrease. Green started occur 1999 has since been increase. Golden were first reported 2012. macroalgal a negative linear relationship coverage China, positive correlation total nitrogen phosphorus loads as well atmospheric CO 2 sea surface temperature (SST). Increased outbreaks are very likely due worsening levels eutrophication, combined rising SST, which contribute reduced tides. increasing grazing microzooplankton also results decline areas affected This study shows clear shift algal over past driven combination climate change, stress, indicating fundamental change coastal systems

Coastal zones can be focal points of acidification where the influx atmospheric CO 2 compounded by additional sources acidity that may collectively impair calcifying organisms. While photosynthetic action macrophytes buffer against coastal ocean acidification, such activity has not been well-studied, particularly among aquacultured seaweeds. Here, we report on field and laboratory experiments performed with North Atlantic populations juvenile hard clams ( Mercenaria mercenaria ), eastern oysters Crassostrea virginica blue mussels Mytilus edulis ) grown without increased kelp Saccharina latissima over a range aquaculture densities (0.3 – g L -1 ). In all experiments, exposure to elevated p (>1,800 µatm) resulted in significantly reduced shell- and/or tissue-based growth rates bivalves relative control conditions. This impairment was fully mitigated when were exposed same source but also co-cultured kelp. Saturation states aragonite transformed from undersaturated saturated treatments present, while remained undersaturated. experiment, near higher pH waters experienced faster shell tissue based compared individuals at sites away Collectively, these results suggest photosynthesis S. associated decreased , fostering carbonate chemistry regime maximized bivalves. As shown benefit growing together under current or future scenarios synergistically beneficial integrated, multi-trophic approach.

Climate-driven species redistributions are facilitated by niche modifications that increase a species's chances of establishment in novel communities. It is well understood how range-extending adjust individual traits when entering environments, yet whether modification ecological collectively alters the pace range extensions or contractions remains unknown. We quantified habitat niche, abundance, physiological performance and cellular defence/damage coral reef fishes coexisting local temperate along 2000 km latitudinal gradient. also assessed their dietary behavioural niches, potential, to understand generalism facilitates successful extension fishes. The fish increased all showed stronger establishment, damage, but decreased defence at cold-range edge, whereas tropical unmodified niches lower establishment. One width body condition, defence, damage energy reserves warm-trailing range, while other contrasting responses. Therefore, generalists might be more than specialists during initial stages climate change, with increasing future warming strengthening this pattern physiologically benefitting disadvantaging specialists.

Sediments are found on all coral reefs around the globe. However, amount of sediment in different reservoirs, and rates at which sediments move between can shape biological functioning reefs. Unfortunately, relatively few studies have examined reef dynamics, associated bio-physical drivers, simultaneously over matching spatial temporal scales. This has led to a partial understanding how living systems connected, especially clear-water offshore To address this problem, four reservoirs/sedimentary processes three drivers were quantified across seven habitats/depths Lizard Island, an exposed mid-shelf Great Barrier Reef. Even location substantial load suspended passed reef; theoretically capable replacing entire standing stock on-reef turf just 8 h. quantification actual deposition suggested that 2 % passing settled reef. The data also revealed marked incongruence (sediment trap data) accumulation (TurfPod profile, with flat back emerging as key areas both accumulation. From ecological perspective, suggests contextual constraints (wave geomorphology) may predispose some or high-load regimes.

Abstract Great hope has been pinned on seaweed cultivation as being a potent way of removing CO 2 to reduce rates sea surface warming and acidification. Marine heatwaves nitrogen pollution in coastal ecosystems are serious current issues that need be better understood inform decision making policy. Here, we investigated the effects simulated heatwave carbon sequestration by an important crop species its phycosphere bacteria. Gracilaria lemaneiformis was grown ambient high conditions (14 200 μ M L −1 ). Photosynthetic rate, biomass particulate organic accumulation were significantly increased “high nitrogen‐no heatwave” conditions. In “ambient conditions, expression genes related photosynthesis down regulated seaweeds lost more dissolved (DOC) surrounding water, resulting refractory (RDOC). photosynthetic gene upregulated; bacterial abundance also can explain reduced DOC RDOC accumulation. The diversity while alleviated this effect. These findings suggest economically alga G . may lose nearshore waters during marine events, enhancing sequestration, enrichment counteractive

Kelps dominate rocky shores in temperate latitudes, acting as important foundation species. Recently, kelp forests have received growing attention for their decline around the world. Climate change is one of main drivers deforestation, both through abiotic stress and/or distortion biotic interactions. In NW Spain, golden ( Laminaria ochroleuca ) recently declined some areas due to excessive grazing. To further investigate mechanisms behind this decline, a thorough 1-year seasonal demographic study was carried out on eight reefs: four healthy and degraded by herbivory. covered full range size classes throughout year reefs. By contrast, only small, newly recruited kelps were found reefs spring-summer, because herbivory autumn-winter caused total collapse populations reef-scale (i.e., all reduced inviable stubs with no blade growth meristem). Bite marks covering showed that fishes, instead invertebrates, culprits Recent studies, mostly conducted Indo-Pacific, also fish herbivory, alone or combination stressors, can maintain canopy-free state best our knowledge, first time shown cause entire reef scale Atlantic. The implications finding management potential recovery are discussed.

Climate change is impacting organisms in every region of the world ocean by acting though on individuals response to their local environments. Given projected future risks derived from these changes, it becoming increasingly important understand regional signals how respond facilitate governance and protection. Benthic structure ecological compositions ecosystem dynamics, therefore not only providing insights into own climate but also ecosystems might conditions. European seas are transitional areas including boreal, warm-temperate, subarctic waters with frequently at limits distributions. Here, we use a meta-analytical approach assess calcification, growth, metabolism, photosynthesis, reproduction, survival benthic acidification warming. Using meta-regression, examine study design factors influence effect-size outcomes. Longer experimental periods generally amplified effects taxonomic groupings related physiological traits against expectation do result acclimation. In agreement global studies, find that impacts vary considerably different traits. We found calcifying an at-risk taxon waters, stressors decreasing growth rates, rates. Fleshy algal species demonstrate resilience stressors, suggesting will undergo restructuring based current emission pathways.
