ABSTRACT Yams are important tubers widely consumed in developing countries various forms, mainly boiled, pounded and fried. Tuber quality is a key criterion for acceptance by the actors value chain. However, genetics of yam tuber has not yet been comprehensively investigated. Given this lack knowledge, we used population genomics candidate gene association approaches to unravel genetic basis three main attributes boiled yam, namely texture, starch content colour indices. We re-sequenced whole genome 127 genotypes with different attributes, performed an enrichment already available functional annotation using comparative genomics. Population analysis highlighted groups 1,053 genes under selection. focused work on known trait-related pathways: pectin, flavonoid biosynthesis, inventoried all structural related those pathways improved 48% more genes. A total 18 containing variants significantly associated target traits were detected, including eight that also found The texture-related distributed between pectin pathways. Overall, use allowed generation unprecedented genomic resource. promising predictive tool identifying other core any trait interest meet growing need diversified demands yams.

The objective of this research endeavor was to enhance the quality and storability Dioscorea bulbifera through investigation effects pre-treatment (soaking) different dehydration temperatures (50, 60, 70°C) on its mass transfer, color kinetics, texture, microstructure, rehydration properties. Ten drying four-color kinetics models were employed describe behavior changes. process demonstrated a falling rate, with reduced time (from 960 540 min) as convective temperature increased from 50 70°C. Moisture diffusivity increasing hot air (4.15838 ×10-10 – 1.03114 ×10-09 m2/s), activation energy determined 41.82 kJ/mol. Slices dried at 70 °C exhibited higher change than those °C. modified model fitted best parameters, followed by fraction model. 60°C showed lower hardness (34.73 N) porosity (27.03%) compared 50°C (49.33 N 19.82%) 70°C (40.16 21.90%) temperature. Microstructure, moisture diffusion, texture closely linked content. Boiling potassium metabisulfite significantly affected yam slices' rate texture. MATLAB analysis provided detailed pore information for each air-dried sample, correlating characteristics. This offers substantial industrial significance providing methods products' quality, shelf-life enhancement, further exploration starch extraction recovery valuable bioactive compounds.

Demand-led breeding strategies are gaining importance in public sector globally. While borrowing approaches from the private sector, programs remain mainly focused on food security and social impact related outcomes. This necessitates information specific user groups their preferences to build targeted customer product profiles for informed decisions. A variety of studies have identified gendered trait preferences, but do not systematically analyze differences or interactions gender with other dimensions, household characteristics, geographic factors. study integrates 1000minds survey trade-off analysis Rural Household Multi-Indicator Survey cassava Nigeria a major product, gari. Abstract Background Quality traits are essential determinants of consumer preferences. Dioscorea alata (Greater Yam), is a starchy tuber crop in tropical regions. However, comprehensive understanding the genetic basis underlying yam quality remains elusive. To address this knowledge gap, we employed population genomics and candidate gene association approaches to unravel factors influencing attributes boiled yam. Methods Results Comparative analysis 45 plant species revealed numerous novel genes absent existing D. annotation. This approach, adding 48% more genes, significantly enhanced functional annotation three crucial metabolic pathways associated with traits: pentose glucuronate interconversions, starch sucrose metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis. In addition, whole-genome sequencing 127 genotypes identified 27 under selection 22 linked texture, content, color through analysis. Notably, five involved content cell wall composition, including 1,3-beta Glucan synthase, β-amylase, Pectin methyl esterase, were common both their expression levels assessed by transcriptomic data. Conclusions The study specific allowed identification important for quality. Our findings provide insights into will help enhancement breeding programs.

Abstract BACKGROUND Nigeria and Cameroon are multi‐ethnic countries with diverse preferences for food characteristics. The present study aimed to inform cassava breeders on consumer‐prioritized eba quality traits. Consumer testing was carried out using the triadic comparison of technologies (tricot). Diverse consumers in villages, towns cities evaluated overall acceptability made from different genotypes. Data both were combined linked laboratory analyses gari used make it. RESULTS There is a strong preference higher cohesiveness brightness especially Cameroon, lower redness yellowness. Relatively hardness springiness values preferred Nigerian locations, whereas Cameroon. Trends solubility swelling power differ between two countries. also reveals that older improved genotype TMS30572 benchmark superior characteristics across regions Nigeria, recently released variety Game changer performs very well In genotypes Obansanjo‐2 TM14F1278P0003 have good stability CONCLUSION wide acceptance single geographical cultural conditions as three acceptable new varieties indicates consumers' surprisingly homogeneous eba. This would enhance breeding efforts develop wider expand potential target areas varieties. © 2023 Authors. The study assesses the gender implications of a target product profile for table potato in Kenya. Breeding programs mostly emphasize farmers’ trait requirements and rarely pay attention to other value chain actors’ preferences. This partially contributes low uptake improved varieties. Therefore, efforts are required assess crop proposals during development, testing, dissemination. In this paper, we traits targeted by breeding program Kenya using G+ tools. applies tool examine instances selected may exacerbate disparity along four domains: unpaid labor, access employment opportunities, requiring extra inputs control over benefits. We use mixed methods including review social scientists, key informant interviews multistakeholder workshop gather insights from female male farmers, breeders, stakeholders. Findings show that pest, disease resistance, shelf-life benefit women men customer segments. On hand, earliness, dry matter, yield could increase drudgery women. demand women’s labor harvesting, sorting food preparation time while also displacing profitable nodes. recommend gender-responsive strategies accompany release variety mitigate inequities enhance adoption.
