We tested the effect of melatonin on membrane fluidity in microsomes a rat liver model which lipid peroxidation was induced by addition FeCl 3 , ADP and NADPH. Membrane monitored using fluorescence spectroscopy estimated quantifying malonaldehyde (MDA)+4‐hydroxyalkenals (4‐HDA) concentrations following induction with without pre‐incubation (1 μ M–3 mM). rigidity increased during while reduced concentration‐dependent manner both MDA+4‐HDA generation. Melatonin's protective may relate to its known ability scavenge free radicals function as an antioxidant.

Abstract. Ionizing radiation is classified as a potent carcinogen, and its injury to living cells is, large extent, due oxidative stress. The molecule most often reported be damaged by ionizing DNA. Hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), considered the damaging of all free generated in organisms, are responsible for DNA damage caused radiation. Melatonin, N‐acetyl‐5‐methoxytryptamine, well‐known antioxidant that protects DNA, lipids, proteins from free‐radical damage. indoleamine manifests antioxidative properties stimulating activities enzymes scavenging directly or indirectly. Among known antioxidants, melatonin highly effective scavenger OH. Melatonin distributed ubiquitously organisms and, far known, cellular compartments, it quickly passes through biological membranes. protective effects against stress have been documented vitro vivo studies different species experiments used human tissues, well when was given humans then tissues collected subjected radioprotective low toxicity make this potential supplement treatment co‐treatment situations where minimized.
