Sexual reproduction is prevalent across diverse taxa. However, sex-determination mechanisms are so that even closely related species often differ in systems. Teleost fish a taxonomic group with frequent turnovers of sex-determining and thus provides us great opportunities to investigate the molecular evolutionary underlying turnover Here, we compile recent studies on diversity fish. We demonstrate genes TGF-β signaling pathway frequently used for master (MSD) genes. MSD arise via two main mechanisms, duplication-and-transposition allelic mutations, few exceptions. also temperature influences sex determination many species, those chromosomes, higher temperatures inducing differentiation into males most cases. Finally, review theoretical models discuss what questions remain elusive.

Abstract Within the thermal tolerance range of fish, metabolism is known to escalate with warming. Rapid thermic changes also trigger a series physiological responses, including activation stress axis, producing cortisol. Fish have adapted their environment by low level plasmatic cortisol when unstressed (basal), so that thriving in natural temperature should not impact basal levels. Yet, surprisingly, little on how affects within and between fish species. Here, we conducted phylogenetic meta‐analysis (1) test whether can explain differences species (2) evaluate role levels individuals same To do this, retrieved plasma data from 126 studies, investigating 33 marine freshwater species, correlated it water temperature. Intra‐species variability was further investigated two species: European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus . Factors such as life stage, sex weight were considered analyses. Overall, our analysis revealed clear positive correlation at which live. The has been confirmed D. , while failed be significant O. In this paper, influence habitat, discussed. Since some abiotic parameters included analysis, study call encourage scientists systematically report other key factors dissolved oxygen or salinity fully depict temperature‐cortisol relationship fishes.

Abstract Sprat Sprattus sprattus (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most significant commercial fish species in Black Sea. This study examines sex ratio, size–age structure, growth, and mortality sprat waters Crimea from 2021 to 2023. The paper discusses geographic variability influence temperature, food availability, fishing pressure on life history this species. In total, 2113 individuals catches were examined. ratio was slightly skewed towards females (1:0.83). maximum total length for both males 10.0 cm, with a weight 8.51 g 6.73 males. lifespan sexes 4 years. Bertalanffy growth equation parameters calculated, L ∞ = 13.79 W 16.3 g, K 0.237 year −1 t 0 −1.53 year. exponent value length–weight relationship 3.14 (positive allometric relationship). natural coefficients 2.13, 0.65 1.48 , respectively, exploitation 0.70, indicating excessive pressure. It determined that lower latitudes had smaller sizes, slower rates shorter lifespans compared higher latitudes. A strong negative correlation found between size sea surface temperature. Introduction Individual metabolism has been identified as a key variable for predicting responses of individuals and populations to climate change, particularly aquatic ectotherms such fishes. Predictions organism standard metabolic rate (SMR), the thermal sensitivity are typically based on allometric scaling rules respirometry-based measures respiratory potential under laboratory conditions. The relevance laboratory-based measurement theoretical predict performance free-ranging animals in complex natural settings questioned, but determining time averaged wild is challenging. Methods Here we draw stable isotope compositions aragonite fish otoliths estimate experienced temperature expressed field (FMR) simultaneously retrospectively at an individual level. We apply otolith FMR proxy population European plaice ( Pleuronectes platessa ) from North Sea during period rapid warming between 1980s mid-2000s, sampling tissue grown both juvenile adult stages. Results Among-individual variations realized mass-specific were large independent scaled positively with body size life stages, contradicting simplistic assumptions that follows relationships inferred rates (SMR). In same individuals, first summer co-varied temperature. Discussion find strong evidence presence consistent phenotypes within sampled population, year was strongest single predictor among variation point sampling. Nonetheless, best fitting models explained only 20% observed variation, pointing among-individual unexplained by mass, or phenotype. Stable isotope-derived estimates have great expand our understanding ecophysiology general especially mechanisms underpinning animal changing environmental ecological

Heat stress events will be more frequent and intense in the future. These challenge capacity of organisms to exhibit sufficient metabolic flexibility adapt such variations. To better understand acclimation processes implemented response acute warming, with an integrative approach we examined vivo rate cardiac mitochondrial respiration Rhône streber, during after a heat on precise time line. The temperature was raised from 13°C 18°C (+1°C per hour) maintained at for 5 days, before returning same rate. We repeatedly measured, days end event, individuals different individuals. At organismal level, oxygen consumption increased line followed by return pre-acclimated levels just stress. Conversely, decreased stress, especially 24 h in, recovered event. Our results suggest that responsible mismatch strebers. Indeed, observed (i) strong thermodynamic effect without any process, suggesting range temperatures chosen not stressful fish, (ii) establishment transitory energy saving process. underline need studies how climate change.
