Background:

Cannabis use among pregnant and lactating people is increasing, despite clinical evidence showing that cannabis may be associated with low birth weight childhood developmental deficits. Our objective was to understand why how these motivations change across perinatal stages.

Methods:

Using qualitative, constructivist grounded theory methodology, we conducted telephone virtual interviews 52 individuals from Canada. We selected participants using maximum variation theoretical sampling. They were eligible if they had been or within the past year decided continue, cease decrease their during period.

SummaryBackgroundThe use of cannabis during pregnancy is rising following its widespread legalization. Cannabidiol (CBD) gaining popularity due to the public perception that it safer than psychoactive component Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, while evidence underpins harm THC and smoke on fetal development, there minimal research safety CBD oral cannabis. The current study aims decipher pregnancy.MethodsUsing a mouse model, we directly compared effects oil exposure (20 mg/kg body weight) from early mid-gestation implantation site remodelling growth. We examined offspring behaviour metabolic activity using both traditional automated cage systems. Lastly, human immune cells assessed how influence angiogenic factor production.FindingsWe observed impaired maternal spiral artery in exposed mice found disrupt cell production. Oral consumption or also resulted significant growth impairment led long-lasting sex-dependent consequences as male exhibited altered aggression females had spatial learning.InterpretationOur results show either developing fetus causes behavioural changes after birth.FundingThe Michael G. OBJECTIVE: To understand pregnant patients' reasons for prenatal cannabis use and perceptions of safety, desired undesirable health care experiences, information about secondarily to racial differences in these preferences. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study including 18 semi-structured, race-concordant virtual focus groups with individuals who self-reported at entry large integrated system Northern California from November 2021 December 2021. The included semi-structured questions that were recorded, transcribed, coded by the research team. Thematic analysis was used analyze data. RESULTS: Overall, 53 participants included; 30 self-identified, as White 23 self-identified Black. Participants averaged 30.3 years age (SD 5.2 years) on average 20.9 weeks gestation enrollment; 69.8% reported daily use, 24.5% weekly 5.7% monthly or less entrance care. Although some quit early pregnancy because concerns potential risks, many perceived lack scientific evidence believed safe. Many preferred over-the-counter prescription medications treating mood, morning sickness, pain, sleep. valued open interactions obstetricians acknowledged their motivations they risks through conversations educational materials. Black participants' perspectives generally similar, but few uniquely described bias related use. CONCLUSION: Pregnant patients manage mood medical symptoms, safer than medications. Obstetrician-initiated, patient-centered around advice discontinue during pregnancy, exploration willingness switch medically recommended interventions pregnancy-related symptoms may benefit patients.

Clinical and preclinical evidence has demonstrated an increased risk for neuropsychiatric disorders following prenatal cannabinoid exposure. However, given the phytochemical complexity of cannabis, there is a need to understand how specific components cannabis may contribute these neurodevelopmental risks later in life. To investigate this, rat model exposure was utilized examine impacts constituents (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]; cannabidiol [CBD]) alone combination on future liability male female offspring. Prenatal THC CBD were associated with low birth weight. At adolescence, offspring displayed sex-specific behavioural changes anxiety, temporal order social cognition, sensorimotor gating. These phenotypes sex treatment-specific neuronal gene transcriptional alterations prefrontal cortex, ventral hippocampus, regions where endocannabinoid system implicated affective cognitive development. Electrophysiology RT-qPCR analysis dysregulation balance excitatory inhibitory signalling developmental consequences cannabinoids. findings reveal critical insights into cannabinoids can differentially impact developing fetal brains males females enhance subsequent risk.

ABSTRACT Introduction Legalization in many jurisdictions has increased the prevalence of cannabis use, including during pregnancy and lactation. Accordingly, clinicians providing perinatal infant care are increasingly required to counsel about this topic, even if they do not feel comfortable or prepared for conversation. The aim research was explore how prenatal pregnant lactating women interact with consumption. Methods Using qualitative description, we conducted semi‐structured interviews 75 individuals Canada: 23 who provide lactation care, 52 made consumption decisions and/or Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Results Three phases clinical encounter influenced decision‐making consumption: initiation a discussion cannabis, sense‐making, outcome encounter. Patients described similar ideals counseling lactation: open, patient‐centered conversation grounded an informed model benefits, risks, alternatives cannabis. While these values as reflecting real interactions, patients reported that their experience, actual interactions did live up ideals. Conclusion Clinicians people report desiring same things from interaction cannabis: sharing information, identification values, facilitation decision. Both groups endorse nonjudgemental approach explores reasons why patient is considering reflects against available evidence known be safe.

As such, pregnant lactating people are faced with challenging decisions, weighing benefits against the potential risks of use. To help clinicians facilitate informed choices, we explored self‐identified information needs who deciding whether or not cannabis. We aimed describe modes sources their information‐seeking satisfaction they found. Methods interviewed 52 in Canada made decision start, stop, continue using lactation.
