Background:
Cannabis
use
among
pregnant
and
lactating
people
is
increasing,
despite
clinical
evidence
showing
that
cannabis
may
be
associated
with
low
birth
weight
childhood
developmental
deficits.
Our
objective
was
to
understand
why
how
these
motivations
change
across
perinatal
stages.
Methods:
Using
qualitative,
constructivist
grounded
theory
methodology,

telephone
virtual
interviews

individuals

OBJECTIVE:
To
understand
pregnant
patients'
reasons
for
prenatal
cannabis
use
and
perceptions
of
safety,
desired
undesirable
health
care
experiences,
information
about
secondarily
to
racial
differences
in
these
preferences.
METHODS:
We
conducted
a
qualitative
study
including
18
semi-structured,
race-concordant
virtual
focus
groups
with
individuals
who
self-reported
at
entry
large
integrated
system
Northern
California
from
November
2021
December
2021.
The
included
semi-structured
questions
that
were
recorded,
transcribed,
coded
by
the
research
team.
Thematic
analysis
was
used
analyze
data.
RESULTS:
Overall,
53
participants

concerns

risks,

perceived
lack
scientific
evidence
believed
safe.
Many
preferred
over-the-counter
prescription
medications

mood,
morning
sickness,
pain,
sleep.

their
motivations

perspectives

Clinical

evidence
has
demonstrated
an
increased
risk
for
neuropsychiatric
disorders
following
prenatal
cannabinoid
exposure.

ABSTRACT
Introduction
Legalization
in
many
jurisdictions
has
increased
the
prevalence
of
cannabis
use,
including
during
pregnancy
and
lactation.
Accordingly,
clinicians
providing
perinatal
infant
care
are
increasingly
required
to
counsel
about
this
topic,
even
if
they
do
not
feel
comfortable
or
prepared
for
conversation.

research
was
explore
how
prenatal
pregnant
lactating
women
interact
with
consumption.
Methods
Using
qualitative
description,
we
conducted
semi‐structured
interviews

individuals
