Mountainous areas host a disproportionately large fraction of Earth's biodiversity, suggesting causal relationship between mountain building and biological diversification. Mountain clade radiations are generally associated with changes in environment, climate, the increase heterogeneity therein during building. However, examining diversification is complex challenge, because isolating effects surface uplift from other abiotic (climate) or biotic variables not straightforward. In this study, we investigate relative contributions climate-driven (temperature) geology-driven (elevation) drivers on evolutionary rates ancient groups organisms South American Andes. We present regional curves Andean elevation based recent compilation paleo-elevational data back to Late Cretaceous, analyse history six frog lizard families that originated equally far time. For two clades (Aromobatidae Leptodactylidae), find they diversified most rapidly early phase (Late Cretaceous - Paleogene), when first high-elevation habitats emerged America. The one (Centrolenidae) correlated Cenozoic temperature variations, higher speciation warm periods. last three (Dendrobatidae, Hemiphractidae Liolaemidae) best explained by environment-independent diversification, although for Liolaemidae, an almost strong positive correlation was found since late Eocene. Our findings imply throughout long-lived Andes, drove different at times, while directly affecting clades. study illustrates importance paleogeographic reconstructions capture complexity our understanding changing environment plays shaping biodiversity patterns observed today.

Quantitative assessments of endemism, evolutionary distinctiveness and extinction threat underpin global conservation prioritization for well-studied taxa, such as birds, mammals, amphibians. However, information is unavailable most the world's taxa. This case Orchidaceae, a hyperdiverse cosmopolitan family with incomplete phylogenetic information. To define priorities, we present framework based on taxonomic measures rarity number regions area occupancy. For 25,434 orchid species distribution data (89.3% Orchidaceae), identify Neotropics hotspots richness, New Guinea hotspot distinctiveness, several islands that contain many rare distinct species. Orchids have similar proportion monotypic genera other Angiosperms, however, more taxonomically are found in single region. We 278 need immediate actions find than 70% these do not currently an IUCN assessment protected ex-situ collections at Botanical Gardens. Our study highlights locations urgent demonstrates can be applied to data-deficient
