Polyploidy is a significant component in the evolution of many taxa, particularly plant groups. However, new polyploids face substantial fitness disadvantages due to lack same-cytotype mates, and factors promoting or preventing polyploid establishment natural populations are often unclear. We develop spatially explicit agent-based simulation models test hypothesis that perennial life history clonal propagation facilitate early stages persistence. Our show more likely establish when they have longer spans than diploids, especially self-fertilization rates high. Polyploids combine sexual reproduction can across wide range histories, but their success moderated by strategy. By tracking individuals mating events, we reveal architecture has impact on spatial structure mixed diploid-polyploid population during establishment: altering patterns within between cytotypes via geitonogamous self-fertilization, mechanisms through which proceeds, final composition population. Overall, our findings provide novel insight into role modulating complex relationship polyploidy, perenniality, clonality offer testable predictions for future empirical work.

Abstract In herbaceous communities which host many perennial species, belowground clonal organs and traits remain largely overlooked in ecosystem functioning studies. However, the compartment is expected to play a key role as greatest proportion of biomass allocated belowground. Our main goal was test whether including underexplored (in tandem with widely used aboveground traits) improves ability predict production soil carbon temperate grasslands. We examined relationships between five plant functional (canopy height, specific leaf area [SLA], lateral spread, multiplication rate, persistence rhizome) allocation (aboveground, roots, rhizomes) organic (SOC). studied 52 grassland plots clustered two Central European regions differing by management intensity. assessed (into roots rhizomes separately). SOC measured from averaging cores at each plot. Trait community means were calculated for trait species compositions using databases. The most important predicting canopy height rhizome. Results, however, differed implying context dependency relationships. Persistence rhizome emerged affecting less intensively managed grasslands—likely because their links economics spectrum. At more grasslands, SLA negatively correlated root biomass, playing (lesser) role. found no significant predictors SOC. Synthesis . This study first attempt integrate carbon. Findings indicate that highly dependent, varying greatly even within same type. Only and, lesser extent, consistently predicted regions. call broader implementation whole‐plant multifunctional approach applied here, ideally extending other open ecosystems. Plant modularity-related traits are important ecological determinants of vegetation composition, dynamics, and resilience. While simple changes in plant biomass resulting from salt treatments usually considered a sufficient indicator for resistance vs. susceptibility to salinity, plants with clonal growth pattern show complex responses environmental conditions. Due physiological integration, often have adaptive advantages highly heterogeneous or disturbed habitats. Although halophytes native various habitats been extensively studied, no special attention has paid the peculiarities tolerance mechanisms halophytes. Therefore, aim present review is identify probable possible halophytic species belonging different types analyze available scientific information on salinity these species. Examples, including growth, will be analyzed, such as based differences degree ramet persistence, rate expansion, salinity-induced clonality, etc.

Root sprouting (RS), i.e. the ability to form adventitious buds on roots, is an important of clonal growth in a number species, and serves as both survival strategy means spatial expansion, particularly plants growing severely recurrently disturbed habitats. Occurrence and/or success habitats are determined by two components, namely produce roots vigour their production. As mechanisms behind different magnitudes RS remain unclear, our study investigates: (1) whether presence or absence specific tissues can promote limit RS; (2) there some relationship between ability, species niche. We studied together with 182 Central European herbaceous under controlled experimental conditions. We used phylogenetic logistic regressions model RS, vigour, anatomical traits parameters niches.A quarter herbs examined were able roots. They characterized preference for open dry habitats, secondary root thickening occurrence sclerified cortical cells was not associated any pattern, but correlated environmental niches indicating that preferred might represent selection pressure more vigorous sprouters than undisturbed wet habitats. Our shows from quite common temperate dicotyledonous herbs. Plants rely on roots for absorption of nutrients from the soil. Differences in traits fine and root system general thus underlie differences among individual species their ability to live habitats differing nutrient status interactions with other species. Here we examine what extent structure is determined by whole‐plant parameters, namely expected life span rooting units (either genetic individuals or ramets clonally growing plants) type belowground nonacquisitive organs such as rhizomes. By using phylogenetic comparative techniques confirm existence two independent directions variation traits, fast–slow continuum cooperation show that associated increasing lifespan plant's (from annuals stoloniferous through rhizomatous up nonclonal perennial species). Lifespan unit determines a range mass fraction (proportion total biomass) tissue density. This shared correlated environment where typically occur, fast end (annual species) occurring productive disturbed, slow (nonclonal perennials) unproductive habitats. Further, clonal have slightly shallower thinner are relieved transport function which served horizontal stem‐derived (stolons rhizomes). confirms plant must be considered determinants (fine) herbs.
