Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a popular neuroimaging technique with proliferating hardware platforms, analysis approaches, and software tools. There has not been standardized file format for storing fNIRS data, which hindered the sharing of data as well adoption development

We investigated the cortical representation of emotional prosody in normal-hearing listeners using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioural assessments. Consistent with previous reports, relied most heavily on F0 cues when recognizing emotion cues; performance was relatively poor-and highly variable between listeners-when only intensity speech-rate were available. Using fNIRS to image activity speech utterances containing natural reduced prosodic cues, we found right superior temporal gyrus (STG) be sensitive prosody, but no emotion-specific activations, suggesting that while might suited investigating mechanisms supporting processing it is less haemodynamic responses individual vocal emotions. Manipulating render informative, amplitude response STG significantly correlated listeners' abilities recognise emotions uninformative cues. Specifically, more able assign degraded showed lower these signals. This suggests a potential objective measure sensitivity benefit neurodiverse populations or hearing-impaired listeners, many whom rely listening technologies such as hearing aids cochlear implants-neither which restore, often further degrade, essential parsing conveyed speech.

Aesthetic appreciation of full-body movements is likely shaped by our cumulative bodily experiences, yet the literature has focused on expertise and familiarity. We ran two experiments exploring individual differences in embodiment experience with arts: In Study 1, we explored how participants’ (n=41) abilities to learn a choreography their aesthetic perceptions while viewing learned vs. unknown movements, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measure cortical activation over Action Observation Network (i.e., inferior frontal gyrus [IFG], parietal lobule, middle temporal [MTG]). 1 demonstrated that enhanced ratings enjoyment, familiarity, reproducibility performance were not associated ratings, but rather IFG right MTG embodied (learned) choreography. 2, combined behavioural data from additional (total n=141), examine relationship between arts robustly. 2 revealed previous sports correlated judgements familiarity movements. Our findings highlight relevance examining experiences fill theoretical gaps understanding action aesthetics.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions that often co-occur present both common distinct profiles. Studying the developmental pathways leading to emergence of ASD and/or ADHD symptomatology is crucial in understanding neurodiversity discovering mechanisms underpin it. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) investigate differences cortical specialization social stimuli between 4- 6-month-old infants at typical elevated likelihood ADHD. Results showed had reduced selectivity vocal sounds left middle superior temporal gyrus. Furthermore, attenuated responses visual several regions compared likelihood. Individual brain were associated with later autism traits, but not traits. These outcomes support our previous observations showing atypical align observed children adults ASD. findings highlight importance characterizing antecedent biomarkers atypicalities processing socially relevant information might contribute phenotypic overlap divergence across their association behavioural symptoms.
