Abstract The “Plantationocene” has gained traction in the environmental humanities as a way of conceptualizing current era otherwise nominated Anthropocene, Capitalocene, or Chthulucene. For Donna Haraway, Anna Tsing, and their interlocutors, concept suggests that our ecological crisis is rooted logics modernization, homogeneity, control, which were developed on historical plantations. This paper argues that, while there indeed need to analyze ways plantation past shapes present, discussions Plantationocene have several crucial limitations. Here, we focus two: first, multispecies framing conceptualizes largely system human control over nature, obscuring centrality racial politics; second, emerging discussion yet meaningfully engage with wide variety existing critiques mode development. Thus, draw deep well Black geographic work provides powerful challenge ongoing colonial–racial legacies plantation, prompting consideration white supremacy, capitalist development, (mis)characterizations what it means be human. These approaches not only reveal more nuanced comprehensive analysis role global crises but also highlight struggles possibilities justice future.

We explore the risk that self-reinforcing feedbacks could push Earth System toward a planetary threshold that, if crossed, prevent stabilization of climate at intermediate temperature rises and cause continued warming on "Hothouse Earth" pathway even as human emissions are reduced. Crossing would lead to much higher global average than any interglacial in past 1.2 million years sea levels significantly time Holocene. examine evidence such might exist where it be. If is resulting trajectory likely serious disruptions ecosystems, society, economies. Collective action required steer away from potential stabilize habitable interglacial-like state. Such entails stewardship entire System-biosphere, climate, societies-and include decarbonization economy, enhancement biosphere carbon sinks, behavioral changes, technological innovations, new governance arrangements, transformed social values.

Much of our understanding Earth's past climate comes from the measurement oxygen and carbon isotope variations in deep-sea benthic foraminifera. Yet, long intervals existing records lack temporal resolution age control needed to thoroughly categorize states Cenozoic era study their dynamics. Here, we present a new, highly resolved, astronomically dated, continuous composite foraminifer developed laboratories. Four states-Hothouse, Warmhouse, Coolhouse, Icehouse-are identified on basis distinctive response astronomical forcing depending greenhouse gas concentrations polar ice sheet volume. Statistical analysis nonlinear behavior encoded record reveals key role that volume plays predictability

This planetary boundaries framework update finds that six of the nine are transgressed, suggesting Earth is now well outside safe operating space for humanity. Ocean acidification close to being breached, while aerosol loading regionally exceeds boundary. Stratospheric ozone levels have slightly recovered. The transgression level has increased all earlier identified as overstepped. As primary production drives system biosphere functions, human appropriation net proposed a control variable functional integrity. boundary also transgressed. modeling different climate and land change illustrates these anthropogenic impacts on must be considered in systemic context.

There is an ongoing debate on what constitutes sustainable intensification of agriculture (SIA). In this paper, we propose that a paradigm for can be defined and translated into operational framework agricultural development. We argue must now defined—at all scales—in the context rapidly rising global environmental changes in Anthropocene, while focusing eradicating poverty hunger contributing to human wellbeing. The criteria approach propose, shift towards agriculture, integrates dual interdependent goals using practices meet needs resilience sustainability landscapes, biosphere, Earth system. Both these, turn, are required sustain future viability agriculture. This aims at repositioning world from its current role as world’s single largest driver change, becoming key contributor transition within safe operating space Earth.
