The chemical pollution crisis severely threatens human and environmental health globally. To tackle this challenge the establishment of an overarching international science-policy body has recently been suggested. We strongly support initiative based on awareness that humanity already likely left safe operating space within planetary boundaries for novel entities including pollution. Immediate action is essential needs to be informed by sound scientific knowledge data compiled critically evaluated interface body. Major challenges such a are (i) foster global production exposure, impacts governance going beyond data-rich regions (e.g., Europe North America), (ii) cover entirety hazardous chemicals, mixtures wastes, (iii) follow one-health perspective considering risks posed chemicals waste ecosystem health, (iv) strive solution-oriented assessments systems thinking. Based multiple evidence urgent scale, we call scientists practitioners mobilize their networks intensify interaction with national governments negotiations intergovernmental explaining anticipated benefit health.

Pregnancy, infancy, and childhood are sensitive windows for environmental exposures. Yet the health effects of exposure to nano- microplastics (NMPs) remain largely uninvestigated or unknown. Although plastic chemicals a well-established research topic, impacts particles unexplored, especially with regard early life exposures. This commentary aims summarize knowns unknowns around child- pregnancy-relevant exposures NMPs via inhalation, placental transfer, ingestion breastmilk, dermal absorption.A comprehensive literature search map state science on found 37 primary articles relevance during revealed major knowledge gaps in field. We discuss opportunities challenges quantifying child-specific (e.g., breastmilk infant formula) effects, light global inequalities baby bottle use, consumption packaged foods, air pollution, hazardous disposal, regulatory safeguards. also needs linking child NMP address context public action.Few studies have addressed sources exposure, estimates currently rely generic assumptions rather than empirical measurements. Furthermore, toxicological has not specifically focused health, yet children's immature defense mechanisms make them particularly vulnerable. Apart from few investigating transfer NMPs, physicochemical properties polymer, size, shape, charge) driving absorption, biodistribution, elimination be benchmarked. Abstract Safe and clean freshwater harvesting from (organic‐containing) saline or wastewater holds great potential for mitigating water scarcity pollution, but remains challenging. Herein, a floating photothermal/catalytic‐integrated interfacial micro‐evaporator ( g ‐C 3 N 4 @PANI/PS) is reported as proof‐of‐concept multifunctional scavenger evaporator system (MSES) to achieve both solar‐driven complete desalination organic degradation. The spherical porous lightweight polystyrene core, incorporated with black surface functional layer @PANI), enables the hybrid naturally float thereby collectively self‐assemble under tension evaporation, which achieves preeminent self‐cleaning salt/solute separation efficient photodegradation rotation. Remarkably, high solar‐vapor conversion efficiency of ≈90% energy localization provides abundant active photocatalytic sites on interface, further enhanced by photothermal cooperation. High photo‐driven degradation efficiencies 99% nonvolatile compounds (non‐VOC) bisphenol A 95% VOC phenol in are achieved. An outdoor comprehensive solar treatment test toward organic‐containing high‐salinity sewage verifies feasibility MSES sustainable (1.3 kg m −2 h −1 ), downstream salt recovery, This strategy may inspire an integrated solution scarcity, energy, environmental pollution carbon neutrality.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a diverse group of unregulated pollutants increasingly present in the environment. These contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, and industrial chemicals, can enter environment through various pathways persist, accumulating food chain posing risks to ecosystems human health. This comprehensive review examines chemical characteristics, sources, varieties ECs. It critically evaluates current understanding their environmental health impacts, highlighting recent advancements challenges detection analysis. The also assesses existing regulations policies, identifying shortcomings proposing potential enhancements. ECs pose significant wildlife by disrupting animal hormones, causing genetic alterations that diminish diversity resilience, altering soil nutrient dynamics physical Furthermore, increasing health, hormonal disruptions, antibiotic resistance, disruption, neurological effects, carcinogenic other long-term impacts. To address these critical issues, offers recommendations for future research, emphasizing areas requiring further investigation comprehend full implications contaminants. suggests increased funding support development advanced technologies, establishment standardized methods, adoption precautionary regulations, enhanced public awareness education, cross-sectoral collaboration, integration scientific research into policy-making. By implementing solutions, we improve our ability detect, monitor, manage ECs, reducing risks.

Protecting human health from fine particulate matter (PM) pollution is the ambitious goal of clean air actions, but current control strategies largely ignore role source-specific PM toxicity. Here, we proposed health-oriented by integrating unequal toxic potencies most polluting industrial PMs. Iron and steel industry (ISI)-emitted PM2.5 exhibit about one order magnitude higher potency than those cement power industries. Compared with mass-based strategy (prioritizing implementation ultralow emission standards in sector), (priority ISI sector) could generate 5.4 times reduction population-weighted potency-adjusted exposure among industries China. Furthermore, marginal abatement cost per unit mass ISI-emitted only a quarter that other two sectors under scenarios. We highlight urgently required to achieve cost-effective reductions risks.

Plastics are complex chemical mixtures of polymers and various intentionally nonintentionally added substances. Despite the well-established links between certain plastic chemicals (bisphenols phthalates) adverse health effects, composition toxicity real-world not well understood. To assess both, we analyzed from 36 food contact articles five countries using nontarget high-resolution mass spectrometry reporter-gene assays for four nuclear receptors that represent key components endocrine metabolic system. We found activating pregnane X receptor (PXR), peroxisome proliferator γ (PPARγ), estrogen α (ERα), inhibiting androgen (AR) prevalent in packaging. detected up to 9936 features a single product each had rather unique fingerprint. tackle this complexity, used stepwise partial least-squares regressions prioritized tentatively identified associated with activity. Our findings demonstrate most packaging contains endocrine- metabolism-disrupting chemicals. Since samples fewer induce less toxicity, simplification is producing safer

Firstly, we discuss joint impact of genetics environment on phenotypes, emphasizing variance attributable to shared non-shared factors, underscoring complexity quantifying exposome's influence health outcomes. Secondly, importance advanced data-driven methods large cohort studies exposomic measurements. Here, exposome-wide association study (ExWAS), an approach designed systematic discovery relationships phenotypes various exposures, identifying significant associations while controlling multiple comparisons. advocate standardized use term “exposome-wide study, ExWAS,” facilitate clear communication literature retrieval this field. The aims guide future researchers understanding evaluating studies.
