Land degradation reduces soil functioning and, consequently, the services that provides. Soil hydrological functions are critical to combat and promote restoration. microorganisms affect hydrology, but role of microbiota in forming sustaining is not well explored. Case studies indicate potential as game-changers restoring functions. We review state art microorganism use land restoration technology, groups with greatest for restoration, knowledge effect on physical properties, proposed strategies long-term degraded lands. also emphasize need advance emerging research field biophysical landscape interactions support soil-plant ecosystem practices.

The Green Revolution of the 1960s improved crop yields in part through widespread cultivation semidwarf plant varieties, which resist lodging but require a high-nitrogen (N) fertilizer input. Because environmentally degrading synthetic use underlies current worldwide cereal yields, future agricultural sustainability demands enhanced N efficiency (NUE). Here, we summarize understanding how plants sense, uptake, and respond to availability model that can be used improve sustainable productivity agriculture. Recent progress unlocking genetic basis NUE within broader context systems biology has provided insights into coordination growth nutrient assimilation inspired implementation new breeding strategy cut high-yield crops. We conclude identifying fresh targets for sensing response crops would simultaneously enable grain launch promote food security.

Endophytic fungi infect plant tissues by evading the immune response, potentially stimulating stress-tolerant growth. The selectively allows microbial colonization to carve endophyte structures through phenotypic genes and metabolic signals. Correspondingly, develop various adaptations symbiotic signal transduction thrive in mycorrhiza. Over past decade, regulatory mechanism of plant-endophyte interaction has been uncovered. Currently, great progress made on endosphere, especially endophytic fungi. Here, we systematically summarize current understanding colonization, molecular recognition pathways, evasion mechanisms clarify transboundary communication that homeostatic phytobiome. Optimal plant development requires root uptake of 14 essential mineral elements from the soil. Since bioavailability these nutrients underlies large variation in space and time, plants must dynamically adjust their architecture to optimize nutrient access acquisition. The information on external availability whole-plant demand is translated into cellular signals that often involve phytohormones as intermediates trigger a systemic or locally restricted developmental response. Timing extent such local responses depend overall nutritional status transmitted shoots roots form other long-distance signals. integration then determines cell division elongation rates primary lateral roots, initiation, emergence, well formation hairs. Here, we review cascades nutrient-related sensing signaling events hormones highlight nutrient–hormone relations coordinate plasticity plants.
