The
rapid
loss
of
reef-building
corals
owing
to
ocean
warming
is
driving
the
development
interventions
such
as
coral
propagation
and
restoration,
selective
breeding
assisted
gene
flow.
Many
these
target
naturally
heat-tolerant
individuals
boost
climate
resilience,
but
challenges
quickly
reliably
quantifying
heat
tolerance
identifying
thermotolerant
have
hampered
implementation.
Here,
we
used
bleaching
automated
stress
systems
perform
rapid,
standardized
assays
on
229
colonies
Acropora
cervicornis
across
six
nurseries
spanning
Florida's
Coral
Reef,
USA.
Analysis
dose-response
curves
for
each
colony
revealed
a
broad
range
in
thermal
among
(approx.
2.5°C
Fv/Fm
ED50),
with
highly
reproducible
rankings
independent
tests
(r
=
0.76).
Most
phenotypic
variation
occurred
within
rather
than
between
them,
pointing
potentially
dominant
role
fixed
genetic
effects
setting
widespread
distribution
tolerant
throughout
population.

Climate
change
is
causing
an
increase
in
the
frequency
and
intensity
of
marine
heatwaves
(MHWs)
mass
mortality
events
(MMEs)
organisms
are
one
their
main
ecological
impacts.
Here,
we
show
that
during
2015-2019
period,
Mediterranean
Sea
has
experienced
exceptional
thermal
conditions
resulting
onset
five
consecutive
years
widespread
MMEs
across
basin.
These
affected
thousands
kilometers
coastline
from
surface
to
45
m,
a
range
habitats
taxa
(50
8
phyla).
Significant
relationships
were
found
between
incidence

exposure

with
MHWs

at

Abstract
Low‐coverage
whole
genome
sequencing
(lcWGS)
has
emerged
as
a
powerful
and
cost‐effective
approach
for
population
genomic
studies
in
both
model
nonmodel
species.
However,
with
read
depths
too
low
to
confidently
call
individual
genotypes,
lcWGS
requires
specialized
analysis
tools
that
explicitly
account
genotype
uncertainty.
A
growing
number
of
such
have
become
available,
but
it
can
be
difficult
get
an
overview
what
types
analyses
performed
reliably
data,
how
the
distribution
effort
between
samples
analysed
per‐sample
affects
inference
accuracy.
In
this
introductory
guide
lcWGS,
we
first
illustrate
cost

RAD‐seq

Abstract
The
global
impacts
of
climate
change
are
evident
in
every
marine
ecosystem.
On
coral
reefs,
mass
bleaching
and
mortality
have
emerged
as
ubiquitous
responses
to
ocean
warming,
yet
one
the
greatest
challenges
this
epiphenomenon
is
linking
information
across
scientific
disciplines
spatial
temporal
scales.
Here
we
review
some
seminal
recent
coral‐bleaching
discoveries
from
an
ecological,
physiological,
molecular
perspective.
We
also
evaluate
which
data
processes
can
improve
predictive
models
provide
a
conceptual
framework
that
integrates
measurements
biological

and

challenges
limit
our
understanding

we
provide
an

microbiome
focusing
on
taxonomic
diversity

well-studied
cryptic
microbes.

corals

phyla,
