Good sleep is essential to good health. Yet for most of its history, medicine has focused on the definition, identification, and treatment problems. Sleep health a term that infrequently used even less frequently defined. It time us change this. Indeed, pressures in research, clinical, regulatory environments require we do so. The populations increasingly defined by positive attributes such as wellness, performance, adaptation, not merely absence disease. can be terms. Empirical data demonstrate several dimensions are related outcomes, measured with self-report objective methods. One suggested definition description items measuring it provided examples. concept synergizes other care agendas, empowering individuals communities, improving population health, reducing costs. Promoting also offers field new research clinical opportunities. In this sense, defining vital only individuals, but itself.

Sleep is increasingly recognized as an important lifestyle contributor to health. However, this has not always been the case, and increasing number of Americans choose curtail sleep in favor other social, leisure, or work-related activities. This resulted a decline average duration over time. duration, mostly short sleep, disorders have emerged being related adverse cardiometabolic risk, including obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease. Here, we review evidence relating risk call for health organizations include evidence-based recommendations their guidelines optimal

It remains unclear how many hours of sleep are associated with the lowest risk type 2 diabetes. This meta-analysis was performed to assess dose-response relationship between duration and diabetes.PubMed Embase were searched up 20 March 2014 for prospective observational studies that assessed Both semiparametric parametric methods used.Ten articles 11 reports eligible inclusion in meta-analysis. A total 18,443 incident cases diabetes ascertained among 482,502 participants follow-up periods ranging from 2.5 16 years. U-shaped observed diabetes, at a category 7-8 h per day. Compared 7-h day, pooled relative risks 1.09 (95% CI 1.04-1.15) each 1-h shorter individuals who slept <7 day 1.14 (1.03-1.26) increment longer duration. Our shows duration. short long significantly increased underscoring importance appropriate delay or prevention

The role of noise as an environmental pollutant and its impact on health are being increasingly recognized. Beyond effects the auditory system, causes annoyance disturbs sleep, it impairs cognitive performance. Furthermore, evidence from epidemiologic studies demonstrates that is associated with increased incidence arterial hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke. Both observational experimental indicate in particular night-time can cause disruptions sleep structure, vegetative arousals (e.g. increases blood pressure heart rate) stress hormone levels oxidative stress, which turn may result endothelial dysfunction hypertension. This review focuses cardiovascular consequences exposure stresses importance mitigation strategies for public health.

Abstract Circadian (∼24-hour) timing systems pervade all kingdoms of life and temporally optimize behavior physiology in humans. Relatively recent changes to our environments, such as the introduction artificial lighting, can disorganize circadian system, from level molecular clocks that regulate cellular activities synchronization between daily cycles solar day. Sleep/wake are intertwined with global trends indicate these, too, increasingly subject disruption. A large proportion world's population is at increased risk environmentally driven rhythm sleep disruption, a minority individuals also genetically predisposed misalignment disorders. The consequences disruption system profound include myriad metabolic ramifications, some which may be compounded by adverse effects on dietary choices. If not addressed, deleterious will continue cause widespread health problems; therefore, implementation numerous behavioral pharmaceutical interventions help restore alignment enhance important.

Shift workers, who are exposed to irregular sleep schedules resulting in deprivation and misalignment of circadian rhythms, have an increased risk diabetes relative day workers. In healthy adults, restriction without promotes insulin resistance. To determine whether the rhythms that typically occurs shift work involves intrinsic adverse metabolic effects independently loss, a parallel group design was used study 26 adults. Both interventions involved 3 inpatient days with 10-h bedtimes, followed by 8 5 h fixed nocturnal bedtimes (circadian alignment) or delayed 8.5 on 4 misalignment). Daily total time (SD) during intervention nearly identical aligned misaligned conditions (4 48 min [5 min] vs. 45 [6 min]). both groups, sensitivity (SI) significantly decreased after restriction, compensatory increase secretion, inflammation increased. male participants misalignment, reduction SI doubled compared those maintained regular bedtimes. Circadian may inflammation, loss.
