Augmented Reality (AR) has been largely deployed on smartphones in recent years. AR gaming, featured with geo-reference, is anchored to our real-world environments. Nevertheless, designing such user interaction in-the-wild under-explored. Therefore, we examined 242 YouTube videos regarding gameplay, primarily Pokémon GO, (1) reveal personal and social threats during (2) identify how connect the spatial contexts. Our video analysis generalises threats, including but not limited hitting bystanders, falling off a cliff, car crashes, crowds blockages, stampedes. Through analysis, Subsequently, propose several design tactics deliver safe nuisance-free usages physical Finally, suggest strategies consider large-scale deployment of at levels individuals local communities, as an auditable accountable framework for safety acceptability.

Today, millions worldwide play popular location-based games (LBGs) such as Pokémon GO. LBGs are designed to be played outdoors, and past research has shown that they can incentivize players travel nature. To further explore this nature-connection, we investigated via a mixed-methods approach the connections between engagement with LBGs, inspiration environmental awareness follows. First, identified relevant gamification features in Study 1. Based on insights, built survey sent GO (N=311) 2. The results showed (a) social networking features, reminders, virtual objects were most explain inspired by playing (b) outdoor partially mediated relationship awareness. These warrant investigations into whether could motivate pro-environment attitudes inspire people care for

Location-based games are a highly technology-dependent game genre that has witnessed an exponential increase in popularity with the democratisation of smartphones as well ubiquitous mobile data and access to satellite navigation. Moving forward into future, location-based can be expected evolve technologies underlying improve. In this conceptual work, we review current state art games, identify key trajectories trends. We discovered 12 trends, based on which jump ten years future evaluate how technology trends may end up influencing gaming. For example, propose year 2035 through improvements map services sensor coverage, will see locative increasingly connected elements physical world. also expect gameplay moves away from solely taking place smartphone screen adoption multiple forms interactions worlds, especially head-mounted displays other wearables become more commonplace.

Contemporary map services such as Google Maps and OpenStreetMaps contain static representations of the world. In addition, these may dynamic data, information traffic jams sudden changes in opening hours businesses. However, data on rural nature areas wildlife is oftentimes scarce or missing, yet this can be useful for e.g., recreational conservationist purposes. study, we investigated use location-based gamified crowdsourcing to motivate people collect data. We developed a prototype called NaturaTrack recruited panel 8 participants test it three days at their leisure. The were tasked photograph all direct (e.g., sightings) indirect footsteps) signs wildlife. our analysis focused understanding users' experiences while using NaturaTrack. findings show that facilitated social personal societal levels, (re)connected users with various ways, enabled us gather sightings (position, timestamp, picture). Our work expands ongoing research by illuminating thematic critical successful motivating implementations.

HCI nature:culture dialogues have recently gained traction, highlighting ample opportunities for investigation. In this paper we look at the potential of locative games in fostering caring engagement with natural/cultural heritage. We present results a contextual study that explores duality Levada walks on Madeira Island and their intrinsic playfulness as natural landscape. Through combination narrative self-reports cultural probes, conducted an on-site investigation motivations embodied experiences hiking these trails, distilling empirical epistemology human-nature interactions. By unpacking various realities tensions ground through feminist ethics care posthuman lens, provide insight into design future interactive technologies to support encourage interaction. There are numerous benefits from regularly walking in nature, and today's mobile technologies have the potential to encourage people do so. Past research has showed that gamified map-based apps location-based games (LBGs) capability incentivize go nature areas cities beyond. In this study, we explored LBGs' bring by conducting a field experiment with new mechanic called Routes popular LBG Pokémon GO. Prior Route feature's launch, created altogether 13 of various lengths both city landscapes. We collected numerical in-game data how many times each was walked deployed survey (n=67) for GO players area where were made. The findings suggest proximity population concentrations rewards key drivers popularity. Players' motivators choose over urban limited outside-the-game factors such as scenery, overall our turned out be more popular.
