The species concept is the cornerstone of biodiversity science, and any paradigm shift in delimitation affects many research fields. Many biologists now are embracing a new "species" as separately evolving populations using different criteria. Individual criteria can emerge during periods speciation; some may never evolve. As such, relates to this inherent heterogeneity speciation process category-which fundamentally overlooked research. Cryptic fall within shift: they continuously being reported from diverse animal phyla but poorly considered current tests ecological evolutionary theory. aim review integrate cryptic science. In first section, we address that absence morphological diversification an phenomenon, "process" counterpart long-studied mechanisms diversification. next section regarding taxonomy, show molecular heavily biased towards distance-based methods. We also stress importance formally naming for better integration into fields use units analysis. Finally, incorporating leads novel insights patterns processes, including large-scale assessments, geographic variation distribution coexistence. Abstract Avoiding Attack discusses the diversity of mechanisms by which prey avoid predator attacks and explores how such defensive have evolved through natural selection. It considers potential detection, they make themselves unprofitable to attack, communicate this status, other species exploited these signals. Using carefully selected examples camouflage, mimicry, warning signals drawn from a wide range ecosystems, authors summarize latest research into fascinating adaptations, developing mathematical models where appropriate making recommendations for future study. This second edition has been extensively rewritten, particularly in application modern genetic techniques transformed our recent understanding adaptations evolutionary genomics phylogenetics. The book also employs more integrated systematic approach, ensuring that each chapter broader focus on ecological consequences anti-predator adaptation. field grown developed considerably over last decade with an explosion new literature, timely.

Abstract Adaptive radiation plays a fundamental role in our understanding of the evolutionary process. However, concept has provoked strong and differing opinions concerning its definition nature among researchers studying wide diversity systems. Here, we take broad view what constitutes an adaptive radiation, seek to find commonalities disparate examples, ranging from plants invertebrate vertebrate animals, remote islands lakes continents, better understand processes shared across radiations. We surveyed many groups evaluate factors considered important large variety species In each these studies, ecological opportunity some form is identified as prerequisite for radiation. evolvability, which can be enhanced by hybridization between distantly related species, may play seeding entire Within radiations, that lead speciation depend largely on (1) whether primary drivers shifts are (a) external membership itself (mostly divergent or disruptive selection) (b) due competition within (interactions members) subsequent reproductive isolation similar environments, (2) extent timing admixture. These differences translate into different patterns accumulation radiations occur extraordinary ways, continue provide rich data diversification life.

Neotropical freshwater fishes (NFFs) constitute the most diverse continental vertebrate fauna on Earth, with more than 6,200 named species compressed into an aquatic footprint <0.5% of total regional land-surface area and representing greatest phenotypic disparity functional diversity any ichthyofauna. Data from fossil record time-calibrated molecular phylogenies indicate that higher taxa (e.g., genera, families) diversified relatively continuously through Cenozoic, across broad geographic ranges South American platform. Biodiversity data for NFF clades support a model radiation rather adaptive radiation, in which speciation occurs mainly allopatry, adaptation are largely decoupled. These radiations occurred under perennial influence river capture sea-level oscillations, episodically fragmented merged portions adjacent networks. The future Anthropocene is uncertain, facing numerous threats at local, regional, scales.

Although some lineages of animals and plants have made impressive adaptive radiations when provided with ecological opportunity, the propensities to radiate vary profoundly among for unknown reasons. In Africa's Lake Victoria region, one cichlid lineage radiated in every lake, largest radiation taking place a lake less than 16,000 years old. We show that all its guilds evolved situ. Cycles fusion through admixture fission speciation characterize history radiation. It was jump-started several swamp-dwelling refugial populations, each which were older hybrid descent, met newly forming where they fused into single population, resuspending old variation. Each population contributed different set ancient alleles from new assembled record time, involving additional fusion-fission cycles. argue repeated cycles make fast predictable.
