Mounting evidence supporting the negative impacts of exposure to neonicotinoids on bees has prompted registration novel ‘bee-friendly’ insecticides for agricultural use. Flupyradifurone (FPF) is a butenolide insecticide that shares same mode action as and been assessed be ‘practically non-toxic adult honeybees' using current risk assessment procedures. However, these assessments overlook some routes specific wild bees, such contact with residues in soil ground-nesters. Co-exposure other pesticides may also lead detrimental synergistic effects. In fully crossed experiment, we possible lethal sublethal effects chronic two used Cucurbita crops, Sivanto Prime fungicide Quadris Top (azoxystrobin difenoconazole), alone or combined, solitary ground-nesting squash ( Xenoglossa pruinosa ). Squash exposed collected less pollen per flower visit, while Sivanto-exposed produced larger offspring. Pesticide co-exposure induced hyperactivity female relative both control single pesticide exposure, reduced number emerging offspring nest compared individual treatments. This study demonstrates ‘low-toxicity’ can adversely affect under field-realistic combination.

Abstract Ecological risk assessments (ERAs) are crucial when developing national strategies to manage adverse effects from pesticide exposure natural populations. Yet, estimating with surrogate species in controlled laboratory studies jeopardizes the ERA process because populations exhibit intraspecific variation within and across species. Here, we investigate extent which underestimates pesticides on different by conducting a meta‐analysis of all records ECOTOX Knowledgebase for honey bees wild exposed neonicotinoids. We found knowledgebase is largely populated acute lethality data Western bee exhibits LD50 up 6 orders magnitude neonicotinoid exposure. challenge reliability as predictors extrapolating toxicity pollinators recommend solutions address (a)biotic interactions occurring nature that make such extrapolations unreliable process.

The widespread and excessive use of pesticides in modern agricultural practices has caused pesticide contamination the environment, animals, humans, with confirmed serious health consequences. Bumblebees and other key pollinators are experiencing global declines, a phenomenon driven by multiple environmental stressors, including pesticide exposure. While bumblebee queens spend most of their life hibernating underground, no study to date has examined how exposure pesticide-contaminated soils might affect during this solitary phase lifecycle. We exposed Bombus impatiens (n = 303) soil treated with field-realistic concentrations two diamide insecticides (chlorantraniliprole cyantraniliprole) fungicides (boscalid difenoconazole), alone or combined, 30-week hibernation period. found that boscalid residues in doubled the likelihood surviving through colony initiation period (after successful hibernation) laying eggs. Our data also revealed complex interactions between queen body mass on aspects founding. Among others, cyantraniliprole led lethal sublethal post-hibernation effects were dependent size, larger showing higher mortality rates, delayed emergence first brood, producing smaller workers. results show depend intrinsic traits physiology challenge our understanding bees respond pesticides under environmentally realistic scenarios.

Bees (Hymenoptera, Anthophila) are widely recognized for their essential ecological roles, including pollination and biodiversity maintenance. Recently, ability to collect environmental particulate matter through electrostatic forces has been explored biomonitoring purposes. This review integrates knowledge on pollen adhesion with emerging insights into bees, emphasizing potential as bioindicators. The mechanisms of adhesion, influenced by factors such the physicochemical properties bee morphology, discussed in detail. Additionally, study evaluates efficiency pollutants, heavy metals, microplastics, nanoplastics, pathogens, pesticides, radionuclides, volatile organic compounds. multidisciplinary approach underscores role bees advancing monitoring methodologies offers innovative tools assessing ecosystem health while addressing drivers decline.
