Over the past 20 years, neuroimaging has become a predominant technique in systems neuroscience. One might envisage that over next years of distributed processing and connectivity will play major role disclosing brain's functional architecture operational principles. The inception this journal been foreshadowed by an ever-increasing number publications on connectivity, causal modeling, connectomics, multivariate analyses patterns brain responses. I accepted invitation to write review with great pleasure hope celebrate critique achievements date, while addressing challenges ahead.

Mechanisms of Gamma Oscillations DOI

Gamma rhythms are commonly observed in many brain regions during both waking and sleep states, yet their functions mechanisms remain a matter of debate. Here we review the cellular synaptic underlying gamma oscillations outline empirical questions controversial conceptual issues. Our main points as follows: First, gamma-band rhythmogenesis is inextricably tied to perisomatic inhibition. Second, short-lived typically emerge from coordinated interaction excitation inhibition, which can be detected local field potentials. Third, rhythm concurs with irregular firing single neurons, network frequency varies extensively depending on mechanism. To document oscillations, efforts should made distinguish them mere increases power and/or increased spiking activity. Fourth, magnitude oscillation modulated by slower rhythms. Such cross-frequency coupling may serve couple active patches cortical circuits. Because ubiquitous nature strong correlation "operational modes" circuits, continue provide important clues about neuronal population dynamics health disease.

Oscillatory neuronal activity may provide a mechanism for dynamic network coordination. Rhythmic interactions can be quantified using multiple metrics, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. This tutorial will review summarize current analysis methods used in the field of invasive non-invasive electrophysiology to study connections between populations. First, we metrics functional connectivity, including coherence, phase synchronization, phase-slope index, Granger causality, specific aim an intuition how these work, as well quantitative definition. Next, highlight number interpretational caveats common pitfalls that arise when performing connectivity analysis, reference problem, signal noise ratio volume conduction input trial sample size bias problem. These illustrated by presenting set MATLAB-scripts, which executed reader simulate potential problems. We discuss issues addressed methods.
