China has been targeting Uyghurs indiscriminately in many countries around the world. However, Uyghur diasporas some are more susceptible to China's repressive practices than other countries. What explains cross-country variations regarding repression of abroad? Towards a functional place: Syrian refugees' contending with the European Union's host‐home schism DOI

Abstract The refugee crisis is rooted in the host‐home schism, a fundamental disconnection between host (the EU) and home (refugees' country of origin). This schism generated by EU's migratory policies resulting from struggles different political camps, compromise far‐right/exclusive camp liberal camp. To assess this we have conducted an in‐depth analysis Syrian refugees' perceptions with focus groups. Authoritarian regimes frequently reach across borders to repress against exiled dissidents. Existing scholarship has investigated the methods and effects of transnational repression. China and Turkey are among the world's top emigrant sending countries. How why have they invested in their diaspora youth, particularly over last two decades? The significance of young diasporans for international affairs remains understudied. Building on concept 'diaspora youth diplomacy', we provide a rare comparative study investigating diplomacy show that similarly engage through homeland tours, linguistic educational programmes, empowerment strategies. Transnational Repression: International Cooperation in Silencing Dissent DOI

Abstract Why do some states assist other countries to reach across national borders and repress their diaspora, while others not? Transnational repression involves host (including democracies) working closely with origin (typically autocracies) transfer citizens living abroad into custody silence dissent. Transnational Human Rights Violations: Addressing the Evolution of Globalized Repression through National Human Rights Institutions DOI Creative Commons

Abstract Transnational Human Rights Violations (THRV) are infringements of individual rights that originate outside the jurisdiction in which they take effect. Ranging from violent and criminal forms transnational repression through to coercion against targets’ family members abroad, digital surveillance, legal intimidation, THRVs today generate widespread systemic constraints on exercise human jurisdictions around world. At present, however, targets typically find few avenues raise complaints, receive assistance or pursue redress. This article proposes a new domestic institutional mechanism directly address this situation. It first examines mutually reinforcing, additive effects censorship era. Transnational surveillance is a powerful tool in the arsenal of autocrats world over. Despite its pervasive use extraterritorial coercion, systematic study regime opponents beyond national borders remains underdeveloped political science, primarily due to limited data availability. To help fill this gap, we constructed Latin American Surveillance dataset, micro-level dataset based on declassified foreign reports produced between 1966 and 1986 by autocratic Brazil. records identity, locations, social ties activism 17,000 individual targets transnational surveillance, vast majority whom were tracked neighbouring countries across America. Drawing these abundant data, empirically explore existing theoretical insights about motivations, methods consequences task that would be difficult do using other sources. Theorizing the spatiality of ICT-mediated transnational repression: Evidence from China’s repression of Uyghurs in Turkiye DOI

Recent years have witnessed burgeoning scholarly interest in how authoritarian states use transnational repression to intimidate and punish their citizens abroad. Our freshly collected surveys in-depth interviews with members of the Uyghur diaspora Turkiye reveal that China’s goes beyond preventing political mobilization. With Internet Communication Technologies (ICTs), China employs widespread against ordinary Uyghurs by cutting off communication lines homeland through Chinese police constantly harassing threatening them, mostly social media applications. Despite growing body literature on repression, spatial dimension ICT-mediated remains relatively undertheorized. Building critical geopolitics, digital geographies, Foucault’s concept panopticon this study theorizes ICT-based practices its borders led configuration “a space insecurity,” which constitutes an idiosyncratic form spatiality affecting Uyghurs’ everyday pervasive tech-based apparatuses mechanisms. This is constituted “disciplinary” “automated” subjects pushed toward constant self-surveillance self-discipline.
