Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on elite sport by postponing the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 four months before original start. This impacted athletes’ macro-cycle periodization, psychological stressors and resources. We analyse whether track-and-field athletes were able to maintain their performance levels successfully across last two cycles, controlling for age, gender doping prevalence. For this, worldwide competition results (excluding multi-events & relays) of at least national level since London 2012 up retrieved. Individual curves analysed using hierarchical multilevel modelling. baselines (random intercept) developments slope) analysed. 2,383 (52% male) recorded 15,766 outcomes 2012. final conditional growth model (ICC = 48%) shows that performances increased in wake games, dropped significantly recovered beyond previous form 2021. There was no difference between men’s women’s developments. Age predictor ( b 0.17, SE 0.02), but violations not 0.01, 0.03). These showcase trends international athletics variability, present an overall successful periodization achieve peak 2020, discuss predictions track field Paris 2024.

Purpose: We evaluated the extent of changes in training practices, recovery, mental health, and sleep patterns athletes during early COVID-19 lockdown a single country-cohort. Methods: A total 686 (59% male, 41% female; 9% World Class, 28% International, 29% National, 26% State, 8% Recreational) from 50 sports (45% individual, 55% team) Malaysia completed an online, survey-based questionnaire study. The questions were related to practices (including recovery injury), patterns. Results: Relative pre-lockdown, intensity (−34%), frequency (−20%, except World-Class), duration (−24%–59%, especially International/World-Class) compromised, by mandated lockdown. During lockdown, more space/access (69%) equipment available for cardiorespiratory training, than technical strength; these resources favoured World-Class athletes. Most trained general strength/health (88%) muscular endurance (71%); some used innovative/digital tools (World-Class 48% vs. lower classification-levels ≤34%). More World-Class, National performed strength plyometrics, sport-specific skills with proper equipment, State/Recreational females (42%) sourced materials social media males (29%). Some (38%) injury prevention exercises; 18% had mild injuries (knees 29%, ankles 26%), received medical diagnosis (International 31%). Lower-level (e.g., State 44%) disclosed that they mentally vulnerable; felt anxious (36% higher-levels 14%–21%). Sleep quality quantity “normal” (49% both), “improved” (35% 27%), only 16% 14% (respectively) stated “worsened” sleep. Conclusion: Lockdown compromised training-related lower-level Athletes are need assistance cope anxiety should be tailored individual country requirements situations.
