Setting the Game Agenda: Reviewing the Emerging Literature on Video Gaming and Psychological Well-Being of Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth

Video
gaming
is
a
popular
youth
pastime
that
has
prompted
scholarship
into
its
relationship
with
psychological
well-being.
However,
sexual
and
gender
diverse
(SGDY)
who
play
video
games
are
largely
overlooked
in
this
research.
SGDY
experience
significant
mental
health
challenges,
but
utilize
coping
strategies
mediated
by
digital
technologies,
necessitating
an
examination
of
their
game
playing
effects
on

literature
review
synthesizes
the
emerging
evidence
base
identifying
key
constructs
related
to
well-being
gaming.
Five
themes
were
derived
from
literature:

identity
development
self-expression
games;

skills;

Inroduction
Digital
resilience
is
an
important
skill
for
adolescents
in
the
digital
age,
but
there
a
lack
of
valid
and
reliable
assessment
methods.
This
study
aimed
to
develop
validate
questionnaire
Chinese
based
on
Resilience
Framework
proposed
by
UK
Children’s
Internet
Safety
Council
Methods
employed
mixed
research
design,
combining
quantitative
qualitative
data
collected
analyzed.
Over
six-month
period
(January
June
2023),
was
distributed
12,208
from
10
high
schools
16
middle
schools,
with
in-depth
interviews
performed
participants.
Results
The
revealed
that
levels
are
slightly
higher
than
average
