Abstract
Adolescents'
management
of
psychopathology
symptoms
is
crucial
for
preventing
diagnosed
conditions,
yet
little
known
about
adolescents’
specific
strategies
to
do
so.
For
instance,
it
remains
unclear
how
adolescents
manage
worrying
(symptom
emotional
problems)
or
lack
focus
hyperactivity/inattention).
To
address
this
gap,
we
created
an
innovative
online
tool
surveying
a
community
sample
218
aged
16
19.
They
shared
they
hyperactivity/inattention,
conduct
problems,
and
rated
effectiveness
their
strategies.
Qualitative
inductive
analysis
uncovered
51
strategies,
some
mirroring
established
emotion
regulation
coping
while
others
were
novel.
Interestingly,
varied
across
symptoms,
the
most
frequently
used
considered
effective.
These
findings
shed
light
on
wide
array
adolescent-specific
symptom-specific
that
find
helpful.

Abstract
Background
The
Coronavirus
disease
2019
(COVID-19)
pandemic
has
impacted
parental
and
child
mental
health
wellbeing
in
the
UK.
This
study
aimed
to
explore
experiences
of
parents
children
with
rare
neurological
neurodevelopmental
conditions
a
known
or
suspected
genetic
cause
(neurogenetic)
across
first
year
Methods
Semi-structured
interviews
were
conducted
11
neurogenetic
conditions.
Parents
recruited
via
opportunity
sampling
from
CoIN
Study,
longitudinal
quantitative
exploring
impact
on
families
Interviews
analysed
using
Interpretative
Phenomenological
Analysis.
Results
Four
main
themes
identified:

Data
5576
parents/carers
2–17-year-old
collected
between
April
2020
January
2021
was
analysed
using
mixed-effect
modelling
latent
class
growth
(mixture)
modelling.ResultsParental
stress
depression,
but
not
anxiety,
were
higher
periods
restrictions.
This
pattern
most
pronounced
parents
primary-school-aged
children,
those
that
worked
at
home
had
adults
household.
Being
younger,
reporting
secondary
below
education,
working
out
home,
secondary-school-aged
special
education
needs
(SEN)/neurodevelopmental
disorders
(ND)
further
moderated
whether,
when
symptoms
changed.
Although
around
three
quarters
reported
consistently
low
symptoms,
a
substantial
minority
high
increasing
depression.
The
latter
more
likely
be
who
younger
than
average,
single
adult
household,
pre-existing
diagnosis
child
educational
ND.ConclusionsThese
findings
emphasise
different
personal
circumstances
inequalities
shaped
affected
by
this
unprecedented
global
highlight
need
support
consideration
meet
families
