Abstract It has been argued that emergent AI systems should be viewed as working partners rather than tools. Building on this perspective, study investigates the process through which academics develop a partnership with generative chatbots using relationship lens and collaborative autoethnographic methods. Based analysis of our experiences AI, we identify five stages development in building successful AI: Playing Around, Infatuation, Committing, Frustration, Enlightenment Readjustment. In reporting each stage, provide vignettes to illustrate emotional cognitive challenges rewards involved, developing skills, experienced anthropomorphic dimension emerging relationship. Since the release of ChatGPT, heated discussions have focused on acceptable uses generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in education, science, and business practices.
