Abstract Freshwater ecosystems face ever increasing environmental and ecological challenges. Recognition of those challenges is not new—over 30 years ago, a series workshops convened to develop research agenda ( The Imperative ) address It was recognized that critical component solving the problems freshwater would require greater interdisciplinary collaboration. Here, we discuss context for “Revisiting Imperative” workshop describe how small‐workshop model can be used effectively seed longer term collaborative partnerships in support meeting face. Some key recommendations include: (1) engage with participants prior maximize efficient use time prime divergence‐convergence thinking; (2) promote bottom‐up participant driven structure; an enough flexibility accommodate changes (i.e., “live” agenda); (3) utilize best practices facilitating team science; (4) provide coordinating structure post‐workshop working group activities.

Abstract Introduction: Integrating community expertise into scientific teams and research endeavors can holistically address complex health challenges grand societal problems. An in-depth understanding of the integration team science engagement principles is needed. The purpose this scoping review was to identify how where approaches are being used simultaneously in research. Methods: We followed Levac’s enhancement Arksey O’Malley’s Scoping Review Framework systematically searched PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, ERIC, Embase for terms through January 2024. Results: Sixty-seven articles were reviewed. Publications describing integrated community-engaged have increased exponentially since 2004. Over half conducted outside U.S., utilized qualitative methods, included community-researcher co-development question study design, described partnership goals, roles, management. Fewer studies evaluated partnership, built capacity, financial compensation communities, or dynamics facilitation. Conclusion: As researchers continue integrate science, common criteria strategies integrating provide 19 recommendations teams, institutions, journals, funding bodies service advancing practice integration.
