The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in drug discovery represents a transformative development addressing neglected diseases, particularly the context developing world. Neglected often overlooked by traditional pharmaceutical research due to limited commercial profitability, pose significant public health challenges low- and middle-income countries. AI-powered offers promising solution accelerating identification potential candidates, optimising process, reducing time cost associated with bringing new treatments market. However, while AI shows promise, many its applications are still their early stages require human validation ensure accuracy reliability predictions. Additionally, models availability high-quality data, which is sparse regions where diseases most prevalent. This viewpoint explores application for examining current impact, related ethical considerations, broader implications It also highlights opportunities presented this context, emphasising need ongoing research, oversight, collaboration between stakeholders fully realise transforming global outcomes.

The safety of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems is as much one human decision-making a technological question. In AI-driven decision support systems, particularly in high-stakes settings such healthcare, ensuring the human-AI interactions paramount, given potential risks following erroneous AI recommendations. To explore this question, we ran safety-focused clinician-AI interaction study physical simulation suite. Physicians were placed simulated intensive care ward, with nurse (played by an experimenter), ICU data chart, high-fidelity patient mannequin and recommender system on display. Clinicians asked to prescribe two drugs for patients suffering from sepsis wore eye-tracking glasses allow us assess where their gaze was directed. We recorded clinician treatment plans before after they saw recommendations, which could be either ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’. 92% clinicians rejected unsafe recommendations vs 29% safe ones. paid increased attention (+37% fixations) However, visual explanations not greater scenarios. Similarly, clinical information (patient monitor, chart) did receive more versus reveal suggesting that physicians look back these sources investigate why suggestion might unsafe. only successfully persuaded change dose scripted comments bedside 5% time. Our emphasises importance oversight safety-critical value evaluating closely resemble real world practice.

Fervent attention was paid to what is coined dual-use research (DUR), or that can both benefit and harm humanity, of concern (DURC), a particular subset DUR reasonably anticipated be safety security if misapplied. The aim this paper not reiterate the challenges DURC governance but look at new turn in DURC, namely posed by use artificial intelligence (AI) pharmaceutical development. This important, as AI increasingly being used for development industry. There growing recognition there dearth industry governmental guidance.
