Do new communication technologies, such as social media, alleviate the collective action problem? This paper provides evidence that penetration of VK, dominant Russian online network, led to more protest activity during a wave protests in Russia 2011. As source exogenous variation network penetration, we use information on city origin students who studied with founder controlling for at same university several years earlier or later. We find 10% increase VK increased probability by 4.6% and number protesters 19%. Additional results suggest media induced reducing costs coordination rather than spreading critical government. observe pro‐governmental support, no polarization. also cities higher fractionalization users between Facebook experienced fewer protests, effect exhibits threshold behavior.

The rapid spread of mobile phones creates potential for sustainably raising agricultural productivity the 2 billion people living in smallholder farming households. Meta-analyses suggest that providing information via digital technologies increased yields by 4% and odds adopting recommended inputs 22%. Benefits likely exceed cost transmission an order magnitude. GPS-enabled smartphones could increase these benefits enabling customized information, thus incentivizing farmers to contribute system. Well-known distortions markets limit ability such systems reach socially efficient scale through purely commercial means. There is a clear role public support extension, but messages designed ministries are often difficult understand use. Realizing communication requires feedback mechanisms enable rigorous testing continuous improvement.

Abstract This article studies the consequences of digital surveillance in dictatorships. I first develop an informational theory repression and co‐optation. argue that resolves dictators' information problem not knowing individual citizens' true anti‐regime sentiments. Media censorship is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes. We conduct field experiment in China to measure the effects providing citizens with access an uncensored internet. track subjects’ media consumption, beliefs regarding media, economic beliefs, political attitudes, and behaviors over 18 months. find four main results: (i) free alone does not induce subjects acquire politically sensitive information; (ii) temporary encouragement leads persistent increase acquisition, indicating that demand permanently low; (iii) acquisition brings broad, substantial, changes knowledge, intended behaviors; (iv) social transmission information statistically significant but small magnitude. calibrate simple model show combination low for moderate means China’s apparatus may remain robust large number receiving (JEL C93, D72, D83, L82, L86, L88, P36)

Protest event analysis is an important method for the study of collective action and social movements typically draws on traditional media reports as data source. Purpose This paper aims to identify ethical challenges of using artificial intelligence (AI)-based accounting systems for decision-making and discusses its findings based on Rest's four-component model antecedents decision-making. study derives implications auditing scholars practitioners. Design/methodology/approach research is rooted in the hermeneutics tradition interpretative research, which reader texts engage a form dialogue.
