The Role of Self-Reported Health and Healthcare Dissatisfaction in Shaping Migration Aspirations Across Africa

This
study
explores
the
relationship
between
self-reported
health
problems,
healthcare
dissatisfaction,
and
migration
aspirations,
preparations,
expectations
in
Africa,
based
on
individual-level
data
from
46
African
countries
(2008–2015).
The
findings
indicate
that
individuals
experiencing
problems
are
more
likely
to
expect
move
domestically
within
next
12
months
take
preparatory
steps
for
international
migration,
such
as
purchasing
a
ticket
or
applying
visa.
However,
do
not
significantly
correlate
with
general
aspirations
suggesting
their
role
is
pronounced
short-term
concrete
preparations
rather
than
long-term
preferences.
Healthcare
dissatisfaction
strongly
associated
but
shows
little
association
actual
preparations.
It
also
linked
higher
(domestic)
short
term.
Notably,
combined
experience
of
dampens
likelihood
domestic
expectations,
particularly
low-income
countries,
potential
barriers
facing
dual
vulnerabilities.

Abstract
Migration
journeys
are
full
of
risk,
navigated
not
just
by
physical
obstacles
but
also
emotional
tides.
This
study
explores
how
the
fluctuation
hope
and
despair
plays
a
role
in
dealing
with
risks.
Drawing
upon
in-depth
interviews
Afghans
Turkey,
this
paper
demonstrates
that
fluctuate
along
migration
contingent
three
elements:
(1)
empirical
evidence
about
future,
(2)
(un)certainty
potential
(3)
agency
or
capability
to
act.
The
research
finds

future
