Abstract Sugarcane ethanol fermentation represents a simple microbial community dominated by S. cerevisiae and co-occurring bacteria with clearly defined functionality. In this study, we dissect the interactions in sugarcane combinatorically reconstituting every possible combination of species, comprising approximately 80% biodiversity terms relative abundance. Functional landscape analysis shows that higher-order counterbalance negative effect pairwise on yield. addition, find Lactobacillus amylovorus improves yeast growth rate yield cross-feeding acetaldehyde, as shown flux balance laboratory experiments. A major open question in microbial community ecology is whether we can predict how the components of a diet collectively determine taxonomic composition communities. Motivated by this challenge, investigate communities assembled pairs nutrients be predicted from those every single nutrient alone.
