ABSTRACT Globally, hammerhead sharks have experienced severe declines owing to continued overexploitation and anthropogenic change. The smooth shark Sphyrna zygaena remains understudied compared other members of the family Sphyrnidae. Despite its vulnerable status, a comprehensive understanding genetic landscape lacking in many regions worldwide. present study aimed conduct fine‐scale genomic assessment within highly dynamic marine environment South Africa's coastline, using thousands single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (3RAD). A combination differentiation‐based outlier detection methods genotype‐environment association (GEA) analysis was employed . Subsequent assessments putatively adaptive loci revealed distinctive south east cline. Among these, notable correlations between variation sea‐surface dissolved oxygen salinity were evident. Conversely, 111,243 neutral SNP markers lack regional population differentiation, finding that remained consistent across various analytical approaches. These results provide evidence for presence differential selection pressures limited spatial range, despite high gene flow implied by selectively dataset. This offers insights regarding potential impacts response fluctuating environmental conditions circumglobally distributed

Australia's coastal marine ecosystems have a deep cultural significance to Indigenous Australians, include multiple World Heritage sites, and support the nation's rapidly growing blue economy. Yet, increasing local pressures global climate change are expected undermine biological, social, cultural, economic value of these within human generation. Mitigating causes is most urgent action secure their future; however, conventional new management actions will play roles in preserving ecosystem function until that achieved. This includes strategies codeveloped with Australians guided by traditional ecological knowledge modeling decision framework. We provide examples developments at one iconic ecosystems, Great Barrier Reef, where recent, large block funding supports research, governance, engagement accelerate development tools for under change.

Abstract The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List identifies threatened and endangered species is a key instrument in global biodiversity conservation efforts. Our understanding the structure value genetic below level rapidly increasing. Nonetheless, IUCN assessment criteria overlook variation within species. Here, we address this blind spot discuss principles status classification relative to intraspecific biodiversity. We focus on coastal species, which thrive heterogeneous environments known drive differentiation. focal example Atlantic cod sugar kelp, have contrasting life histories, are ecologically economically important constituents ecosystem, currently not classified as Norway Canada. expose population structure, presence ecotypes genetic-environment covariation, well loss that threatens these Because makeup directly influences their resilience, omitting information from assessments can result adaptive capacity future stressors, such climate change. Consequently, recognizing preserving emerges vital species’ abilities adapt survive ocean conditions.

Abstract Background The sugar kelp Saccharina latissima is a Laminariales species widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Its physiology and ecology have been studied since 1960s, given its ecological relevance on western temperate coasts. However, research interest has rising recently, driven mainly by reports of negative impacts anthropogenically induced environmental change increased commercial cultivating species, with several industrial applications for resulting biomass. Scope We used variety sources published between 2009 to May 2023 (but including some earlier literature where required), provide comprehensive review ecology, physiology, biochemical molecular biology S. latissima. In so doing we aimed better understand species’ response stressors natural communities, but also inform sustainable cultivation species. Conclusion Due wide distribution, developed physiological mechanisms adjust changes, adjustments photosynthetic parameters, modulation osmolytes antioxidants, reprogramming gene expression epigenetic modifications, among others summarized this review. This particularly important because massive changes abundance distribution already observed. Namely, presence significantly decreased at rear edges both sides Atlantic, polar regions. Recent developments genomics, transcriptomics epigenomics clarified existence genetic differentiation along distributional range implications fitness locations. complex biotic abiotic interactions unraveled here demonstrated cascading effects disappearance forest can marine ecosystem. show how an excellent model study acclimation adaptation variability predict future persistence under change.

Abstract Sustainable fisheries require reliable species identification and understanding of the underlying genetic hierarchies within targeted species. Three Sebastes are commonly found in northeastern Atlantic: mentella (beaked redfish), norvegicus (golden viviparus (Norway redfish). These morphologically similar have largely overlapping distribution ranges. Besides, three cryptic for S. depth-defined ecotypes been suggested. Genetic knowledge methods needed to identify monitor these look at their geographic distribution. Here, a total 99 specimens mentella, as well A B were sequenced pools aligned against reference genome from sister species, fasciatus (Acadian The measured divergence between all pairs, including pair B, was high (mean F ST = 0.33-0.61) encompassing throughout genomes. Introduction Heat stress is one of the main threats for seaweed aquaculture, leading to decay blades and causing serious economic losses. A newly developed biostimulant, Sargassum horneri extract (SHE), can enhance heat-tolerance in Neopyropia yezoensis, which be applied aquaculture. However, molecular mechanism underlying this acquired still unclear. Method In study, we examined transcriptional regulation N. yezoensis under heat after SHE pre-treatment by performing RNA-Seq on illumina Novaseq platform differentially expressed gene analysis. Result discussion Our results show that, stress, alleviate suppression genes involved normal cell activities, such as ribosome biogenesis, photosynthesis, respiration cycle. On other hand, also induce some key heat-tolerance. We found that combination related epigenetic modification, suggesting may facilitate formation memory yezoensis. study provides information understanding promoting application seaweed-derived biostimulants
