The physiological role and the molecular architecture of circadian clock in fully developed organisms are well established. Yet, we have a limited understanding function during ontogenesis. We used null mutant (per0) gene period (per) Drosophila melanogaster to ask whether PER may play normal brain development. In third-instar larvae, observed that absence functional per results increased genotoxic stress compared wild-type controls. detected double-strand DNA breaks central nervous system chromosome aberrations dividing neuronal precursor cells. demonstrated reactive oxygen species (ROS) causal effect expression glia is necessary sufficient suppress such phenotype. Finally, shown result less condensed chromatin, which contributes damage.

ABSTRACT Olfaction is a critical sensory modality for invertebrates, and it mediates wide range of behaviors physiological processes. Like most living organisms, insects live in rhythmic environments: the succession nights days accompanied by cyclic variations light intensity temperature, as well availability resources activity predators. Responding to olfactory cues proper temporal context thus highly adaptive allows efficient allocation energy resources. Given agricultural or epidemiological importance some insect species, understanding rhythms development effective control strategies. Although vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster has been classical model study olfaction circadian rhythms, recent studies focusing on non-model species have expanded our rhythms. Additionally, evidence revealing receptor co-expression neurons brought about an ongoing paradigm shift olfaction, making timely review state knowledge identify future directions field. In this Review, we discuss multiple biological scales at which are being analyzed, outstanding questions.

Establishing, maintaining, and removing histone post-translational modifications associated with heterochromatin is critical for shaping genomic structure function as a cell navigates different stages of development, activity, disease. Dynamic regulation the repressive chromatin landscape has been documented in several key states - germline cells, activated immune actively replicating, quiescent cells notable variations underlying mechanisms. Here, we discuss role these diverse contexts directing maintaining observed landscapes. These investigations reveal architectures that are highly responsive to functional context cell's existence and, turn, their contribution stable identity.

The classical function of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is to maintain electrolytic homeostasis and control extracellular volume blood pressure. MR expressed in central nervous system (CNS) involved regulation hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis as well sleep physiology, playing a role non-rapid eye movement (NREM) phase sleep. Some patients with psychiatric disorders have very poor quality, relationship between dysregulation this disorder has been found them. In addition, renal peripheral clock. One most common comorbidities observed chronic kidney disease (CKD) quality. Patients CKD experience disturbances, including reduced duration, fragmentation, insomnia. To date, no studies specifically investigated activation CKD-associated disturbances. However, review, we analyzed environment that occurs proposed two MR-related mechanisms may be responsible for these disturbances: circadian clock disruption high levels agonist CKD.
