Comparison of Suicide Completion Rate in Korean Students Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Pandemics

Objective
This
study
compared
the
incidence
of
suicide
cases
among
Korean
students
before
and
after
coronavirus
disease-2019
(COVID-19)
pandemic.Methods
Aggregated
case
reports
all
known
victims
attending
elementary,
middle,
high
school
in
South
Korea
from
2017
to
2022
were
analyzed.
These
reports,
compiled
by
teachers
under
directive
Department
Education,
surveyed
circumstances
surrounding
each
identified
associated
risk
factors
posthumously.Results
The
completed
rate
was
2.37
per
100,000
pre-COVID-19
(2017–2019),
significantly
increasing
3.37
post-COVID-19
(2020–2022;
odds
ratio
[OR]
1.42,
p<0.001).
began
rise
approximately
6
months
into
pandemic
continued
worsen
throughout
2021
2022.
Fair
attendance
increased
2020
(74.83%,
p=0.003)
during
initial
stage

Healthy
Minds
Thriving
Kids
(HMTK)
is
a
free

mental
health
skill
building
program
developed
by
the
Child
Mind
Institute
with

Objectives
The
COVID-19

improved
well-being

coping
strategies
post
lockdown,
which
testament
people’s
resilience.

said,
it
clear
backgrounds
lacked
during
now
psychological,
practical
relational
assistance
challenges.
Conclusions
While
future
studies
benefit
larger
ethnically
diverse
sample,

government
policies
