Mucormycosis, a rare but deadly fungal infection, was an epidemic during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rise in cases (COVID-19-associated mucormycosis, CAM) is attributed to excessive steroid and antibiotic use, poor hospital hygiene, crowded settings. Major contributing factors include diabetes weakened immune systems. main manifesting forms of CAM─cutaneous, pulmonary, deadliest, rhinocerebral─and disseminated infections elevated mortality rates 85%. Recent focus lies on small-molecule inhibitors due their advantages over standard treatments like surgery liposomal amphotericin B (which carry several long-term adverse effects), offering potential central nervous system penetration, diverse targets, simpler dosing owing small size, rendering ability traverse blood–brain barrier via passive diffusion facilitated by phospholipid membrane. Adaptation versatility mucormycosis are multitude virulence factors, enabling pathogen dynamically respond various environmental stressors. A comprehensive understanding these mechanisms imperative for devising effective therapeutic interventions against this highly opportunistic that thrives immunocompromised individuals through its angio-invasive nature. Hence, Review delineates principal it employs persist challenging host environments, current progress developing them.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is one of the most difficult forms disease to diagnose due its lack specific clinical features. It extremely rare observe gastrointestinal in pediatric acute leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy. In this report, we describe a case child with who developed invasive mucormycosis, leading appendiceal perforation and abdominal wall infection. Initially, surgical intervention was delayed concerns over exacerbating bone marrow suppression, which ultimately resulted progression intra-abdominal However, after thorough debridement infection treatment liposomal amphotericin B, patient gradually recovered. This highlights importance early complete infections abscesses prevent further spread shorten course disease, improve outcomes.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is currently a great cause of concern for the healthcare sector around globe. SARS-CoV-2 an RNA virus that causes serious associated with numerous adverse effects and multiple complications different organs systems during its pathogenic cycle in humans. Individuals affected by COVID-19, especially elderly populations immunocompromised people, are greatly vulnerable to opportunistic fungal pathogens. Aspergillosis, invasive candidiasis, mucormycosis widespread coinfections COVID-19 patients. Other infections rare but exhibiting increased incidence current scenario include caused Pneumocystis jirovecii, Histoplasma sp., Cryptococcus etc. By producing virulent spores, these pathogens increase severity morbidity fatality rates patients globally. These generally occur recovering from infection, resulting rehospitalization. Older individuals at higher risk developing infections. This review focuses on understanding prevalent patients, people. We have also highlighted important preventive methods, diagnostic approaches, prophylactic measures

Mucormycosis is an uncommon, yet deadly invasive fungal infection caused by the Mucorales moulds. These pathogens are a WHO-assigned high-priority pathogen group, as mucormycosis incidence increasing, and there unacceptably high mortality with current antifungal therapies. Current diagnostic methods have inadequate sensitivity specificity may issues accessibility or turnaround time. Patients diabetes mellitus immune compromise predisposed to these environmental fungi, but COVID-19 has established itself new risk factor. also cause healthcare-associated outbreaks, clusters associated natural disasters been identified. Robust epidemiological surveillance into burden of disease, at-risk populations, emerging required. Emerging serological molecular techniques offer faster route diagnosis, while newly developed agents show promise in preliminary studies. Equitable access therapies will be key identifying treating mucormycosis, delayed initiation therapy higher mortality.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection which associated with poor prognosis. Only a few antifungals are available in the arsenal against mucormycosis. The global guidelines for diagnosing and managing mucormycosis recommend high doses of liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB) as first-line treatment. Isavuconazole another potential treatment option This systematic review aims to consolidate analyse existing evidence concerning efficacy safety isavuconazole treating alone or combination LAmB. For data aggregation, comprehensive searches were conducted across various electronic databases, such PubMed, Science Direct, Trip, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Open-Gray. Furthermore, we explored gray literature, employing tailored keywords. reference lists selected articles scrutinized identify additional pertinent publications. Articles reporting any studies, case series, reports on form exclusively involving human subjects published English included. There no time restrictions involved. We extracted crucial data, publication year, country, disease form, dosage, frequency, duration, overall outcomes, reported adverse effects. A total 31 articles, included four 24 reports, one open-label trial, randomized controlled non-interventional registry study, final analysis. 135 adult patients 14 children treated primary monotherapy, therapy, nonprimary therapy. mortality rate following LAmB plus azole, followed posaconazole only was 32%, 6.6%, 13.7%, 17.2% 24.6%, respectively. heterogeneity studies did not allow comparison different strategies (primary mono- vs. combination, etc.). use therapies during acute phase via intravenous administration alongside other triazoles, by long-term monotherapy oral route, has yielded promising recovery rates. Adverse events infrequently reported.

The successful treatment of mucormycosis requires; early diagnosis; reversal underlying predisposing risk factors, if possible, surgical debridement, where applicable and prompt antifungal therapy. Amphotericin B is the gold standard against to date. However, there are newer agents described recently like posaconazole isavuconazole which can be used as an option in a few instances. Although amphotericin especially liposomal preparation preferred agent, availability cost limit its use, resource-limited setups. Generally, azole drugs, first generations such fluconazole, not effective zygomycetes. reports showed complete recovery after use fluconazole for adjunct treatment. Here we report on 35-year-old newly diagnosed diabetic woman with Sinoorbital who has been treated debridement intermittent bases was discharged home without optimal response but returned completely improved three months oral fluconazole.

Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFR) is a rare, severe, and life-threatening opportunistic infection associated with high mortality morbidity. Rapid accurate diagnosis treatment are crucial for survival effective disease management. Diagnosing AIFR challenging because no single pathognomonic feature exists other than surgical biopsy showing angioinvasion necrosis. This narrative review focuses on the diagnostic challenges pitfalls, emphasizing critical clinical value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) early AIFR. It includes selected cases that illustrate significance MRI. When suspected, symptoms, nasal endoscopy, blood samples, facial computed tomography all provide non-specific information. In contrast, MRI can identify signs devitalized sinonasal mucosa consistent The absence mucosal enhancement T1-weighted images, combined restricted diffusivity, characteristic features presented underscore usefulness in supporting suspicion accurately determining its topography, thereby guiding biopsies debridement. suspected AIFR, serves as valuable supplementary, non-invasive tool to help determine whether prompt or debridement necessary, enhancing improving rates. Therefore, threshold conducting an these should be low.
