Generative artificial intelligence in teacher training: a narrative scoping review

The
emergence
of
generative
artificial
intelligence
(GenAI)
has
transformed
various
sectors,
including
education.
This
narrative
scoping
review
examines
how
GenAI
is
being
integrated
into
teacher
training
programs,
exploring
its
applications,
benefits,
challenges,
and
implementation
frameworks.
By
synthesizing
findings
from
recent
literature
(2022-2025),
we
identify
key
themes
the
development
AI
literacy
among
teachers,
impact
on
pedagogical
content
knowledge,
ethical
considerations
in
implementation.
Our
analysis
reveals
significant
benefits
enhancing
teaching
performance
facilitating
personalized
learning,
while
also
highlighting
challenges
such
as
technical
limitations,
concerns,
resistance
to
change.
We
gaps
current
research,
particularly
non-STEM
subjects
framework
development,
suggest
directions
for
future
research
advance
responsible
integration

The Dual-use Dilemma in LLMs: Do Empowering Ethical Capacities Make a Degraded Utility?

Recent
years
have
witnessed
extensive
efforts
to
enhance
Large
Language
Models
(LLMs)
across
various
domains,
alongside
growing
attention
their
ethical
implications.
However,
a
critical
challenge
remains
largely
overlooked:
LLMs
must
balance
between
rejecting
harmful
requests
for
safety
and
accommodating
legitimate
ones
utility.
This
paper
presents
Direct
Preference
Optimization
(DPO)
based
alignment
framework
that
achieves
better
overall
performance
by
addressing
this
ethical-utility
trade-off,
using
chemical
domain
applications
as
proof-of-concept.
Our
pipeline
starts
with
GPT-assisted
three-phase
data
generation
scheme,
in
which
we
create
LibraChemQA,
question-answering
dataset
comprising
31.6k
triplet
instances.
By
incorporating
an
innovative
balanced
seed
the
process,
our
systematically
considers
both
illegitimate
requests.
The
also
introduces
rephrasing
mechanism
efficient
augmentation
enhances
model’s
comprehension.
We
further
develop
novel
hybrid
evaluation
scheme
LLM
judges
precise
assessment
of
Experimental
results
demonstrate
substantial
improvements
where
utility
are
considered
-
resulting
model,
LibraChem,
outperforms
leading
including
Claude-3,
GPT-4o,
LLaMA-3
margins
13.44%,
7.16%,
7.10%
respectively
on
released
benchmark.

Contemporary
education
is
evolving
in
a
landscape
shaped
by
technological
advancements,
with
generative
artificial
intelligence
(AI)
gaining
significant
attention
from
educators
and
researchers.
ChatGPT,
particular,
has
been
recognized
for
its
potential
to
revolutionize
teachers’
tasks,
such
as
lesson
planning.
However,
effectiveness
designing
science
plans
aligned
the
research-based
recommendations
of
Science
Education
literature
remains
infancy.
This
exploratory
study
seeks
address
this
gap
examining
ChatGPT-assisted
planning
primary
schools
through
lens
sound
theoretical
framework
Education:
pedagogical
content
knowledge
(PCK).
Guided
question,
“What
are
characteristics
created
ChatGPT
terms
PCK?”,
we
designed
four
interactions
ChatGPT-4o
using
carefully
constructed
prompts
informed
specific
PCK
aspects
prompt
engineering
strategies.
Using
qualitative
analysis,
analyzed
data
these
interactions.
Findings
indicate
that
incorporating
elements
into
prompts,
layer
prompting
strategies,
providing
reference
texts
might
enhance
quality
AI-generated
plans.

Abstract
Integrating
generative
artificial
intelligence
(GenAI)
in
pre-service
teachers’
education
programs
offers
a
transformative
opportunity
to
enhance
the
pedagogical
development
of
future
science
educators.
This
conceptual
paper
suggests
applying
GenAI
tool
evaluate
content
knowledge
(PCK)
among
teachers.
By
holding
interactive
dialogues
with
GenAI,
teachers
engage
lesson
planning
way
that
reveals
their
understanding
content,
pedagogy,
and
PCK
while
facilitating
practical
application
theoretical
knowledge.
Interpretation
these
interactions
provides
insights
into
teachers-to-be
skills,
enabling
personalized
learning
experiences
targeted
program
adjustments.
The
underscores
need
equip
necessary
competencies
utilize
effectively
teaching
practices.
It
contributes
ongoing
discourse
on
technology’s
role
teacher
preparation
programs,
highlighting
potential
addressing
existing
challenges
evaluating
developing
via
GenAI.
