Abstract This study investigated language teachers’ emotion regulation motives (ERMs) and their identity construction in cross‐cultural contexts. Drawing upon qualitative data about eight Chinese as a second teachers for international students through semi‐structured interviews, classroom observation, document collection, the identified three overarching six identities of teachers: teacher instructor disciplinarian who regulated emotions improving teaching effectiveness, caregiver observer navigating teacher–student relationships, mediator defender reconciling cultural differences.
