Abstract: The influence of sex and gender-related factors on health disease at all levels scale, across conditions, throughout the entire life course is increasingly clear. A series policies instituted by National Institutes Health (NIH) that require researchers to include appropriate populations analyze data accordingly have strengthened evidence base around women. Translating these advances research ecosystem can catalyze rigorous biomedical discovery improve health. We encourage journals, publishers, funders align their expectations regarding gender considerations in with those NIH other international funding agencies.

The integration of sex and gender in medical research clinical practice is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone for achieving equitable health outcomes. Biological influence the manifestation, progression, treatment response numerous diseases. influences disease outcomes through genetic, hormonal, physiological factors, while impacts them via identity, societal roles behaviors. Historically, has focused predominantly on male body, leading to diagnostic therapeutic gaps women gender-diverse populations. In particular, remain underrepresented trials, suboptimal strategies addition, many conditions, such cardiovascular, metabolic neurological diseases, sex-specific variations risk factors presentation are prominent. present review discusses critical importance distinguishing between preclinical research, necessity incorporating these variables across all stages from study design analysis reporting studies trials. By distinct but interacting variables, we propose framework advance equity foster personalized, inclusive healthcare. This approach will promote development gender-sensitive guidelines, enhance accuracy tools, ultimately contribute improved individuals, regardless their or identity.

To enhance inclusivity and rigor, many funding agencies journals now mandate the inclusion of females as well males in biomedical studies. These mandates have enhanced generalizability created unprecedented opportunities to discover sex differences. Education sound methods consider a subgroup category has lagged behind, however, resulting problematic literature which study designs, analyses, interpretations results are often flawed. Here, we outline best practices for complying with sex-inclusive mandates, both studies differences primary focus those they not. Our recommendations organized within “4 Cs Studying Sex Strengthen Science: Consideration, Collection, Characterization Communication,” framework developed by Office Research on Women’s Health at National Institutes United States. Following these guidelines should help researchers include their while same time upholding high standards rigor.

The incorporation of sex and gender (S/G) related factors is commonly acknowledged as a necessary step to advance towards more personalized diagnoses treatments for somatic, psychiatric, neurological diseases. Until now, most attempts integrate S/G-related have been reduced identifying average differences between females males in behavioral/ biological variables. present commentary questions this traditional approach by highlighting three main sets limitations: 1) Issues stemming from the use classic parametric methods compare means; 2) challenges ability means accurately represent data within groups groups; 3) mean comparisons impose results' binarization binary theoretical framework that precludes advancing precision medicine. Alternative free these limitations are also discussed. We hope arguments will contribute reflecting on how research S/G conducted could be improved.

There are sex differences in vulnerability and resilience to the stressors of aging subsequent age-related cognitive decline. Cellular senescence occurs as a response damaging or stress-inducing stimuli. The includes state irreversible growth arrest, development senescence-associated secretory phenotype, release pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with diseases. Senolytics compounds designed eliminate senescent cells. Our recent work indicates that senolytic treatment preserves function male F344 rats. current study examined effect on female Female rats (12 months) were treated dasatinib (1.2 mg/kg) + quercetin ABT-263 vehicle for 7 months. Examination estrus cycle indicated females had undergone estropause during treatment. Senolytic may have increased behavioral stress responsivity, particularly initial training cued version watermaze. However, pre-training cue task reduced responsivity spatial all groups learned discrimination. In contrast preserved memory observed senolytic-treated males, older exhibited impaired episodic relative young (6-month) females. We suggest not been able compensate loss estradiol, which can act mechanisms anxiety independent cellular senescence.

Research policies aiming to integrate sex and gender in scientific studies are receiving increased attention academia. Incorporating these into health research is essential for improving targeted equitable healthcare outcomes, by considering both disparities similarities between individuals relating gender. Although efforts urgent critical, only an intersectional approach, which considers broad multidimensional aspects of individual's identity, can provide a complete understanding the factors that impact health. In this commentary, we emphasize order approach equity, it crucial examine how intersect with such as culture, ethnicity, minority status, socioeconomic conditions influence outcomes. To facilitate evidence-based interventions tangible impact, must consider linked biological environmental factors.

Recently implemented research policies requiring the inclusion of females and males have created an urgent need for effective training in how to account sex, some cases gender, biomedical studies. Here, we evaluated three sets publicly available online materials on this topic: (1) Integrating Sex & Gender Health Research from Canadian Institutes (CIHR); (2) as a Biological Variable: A Primer United States National (NIH); (3) The Dimension Biomedical Research, developed part "Leading Innovative measures reach gender Balance Activities" (LIBRA) European Commission. We reviewed each course with respect their coverage What is required by policy; Rationale Handling concepts "sex" "gender;" (4) design analysis; (5) Interpreting reporting data. All courses discussed importance including better generalize results, discover potential sex differences, tailor treatments men women. entangled nature operationalization downsides focusing more than other sources variation were minimally discussed. Notably, all explicitly endorsed invalid analytical approaches that produce bias toward false positive discoveries difference. Our analysis suggests revised or new incorporate four major topics: precise risks over-emphasis category, recognition complex entangled, rigorous study data analysis.

The purpose review provide an updated assessment current research that summarizes differences pertaining microglia their varied responses AD.
