Abstract GO/noGO tasks enable assessing decision-making processes and the ability to suppress a specific action according context. Here, rats had discriminate between 2 visual stimuli (GO or noGO) shown on an iPad screen. The execution (for GO) nonexecution of selected (to touch not display) were reinforced with food. main goal was record analyze local field potentials collected from cortical subcortical structures when screen during subsequent activities. Rats implanted recording electrodes in prelimbic cortex, primary motor nucleus accumbens septi, basolateral amygdala, dorsolateral dorsomedial striatum, hippocampal CA1, mediodorsal thalamic nucleus. Spectral analyses data demonstrate that cortex selectively involved cognitive motivational processing learning task but reward-directed behaviors. In addition, other recorded presented tendencies be these types brain activity response presentation GO noGO stimuli. analyses, spectrograms, coherence areas indicate their involvement vs. tasks.

The multiple-memory-systems framework-that distinct types of memory are supported by brain systems-has guided learning and research for decades. However, recent work challenges the one-to-one mapping between structures central to this taxonomy, with key memory-related supporting multiple functions across substructures. Here we integrate cross-species findings in hippocampus, striatum, amygdala propose an updated framework subsystems (MMSS). We provide evidence two organizational principles MMSS theory: First, opposing representations colocated same structures; second, parallel structures. discuss why burgeoning has potential a useful revision classic theories long-term memory, what is needed further validate framework, how novel perspective on organization may guide future research.

Abstract Goal‐directed and habitual actions are clearly defined by their associative relations. Whereas goal‐directed control can be confirmed via tests of outcome devaluation contingency‐degradation sensitivity, a comparable criterion for positively detecting habits has not been established. To confirm responding, test the stimulus–response association is required while also ruling out control. Here we describe an approach to developing such in rats using two discriminative stimuli that set occasion different responses then earn same outcome. Performance was insensitive showed specificity, indicative stimulus‐controlled behavior. The reliance associations further supported lack sensitivity during single extinction session used here. These results demonstrate concurrently trained come under when they share common By reducing ability one stimulus signal its corresponding response–outcome association, found evidence dissociated from habits. Overall, these experiments provide assessing specific investigate

Behavioral flexibility allows animals to adjust actions changing environments. While the basal ganglia are critical for adaptation, specific role of external globus pallidus (GPe) is unclear. This study examined contributions two major GPe cell types-prototypic neurons projecting subthalamic nucleus (Proto GPe→STN neurons) and astrocytes-to behavioral flexibility. Using longitudinal operant conditioning with context reversals, we found that Proto dynamically represent contextual information correlating optimality. In contrast, astrocytes exhibited gradual encoding independent performance. Abstract Voluntary behaviors (operants) can come in two varieties: Goal‐directed actions, which are emitted based on the remembered value of reinforcer, and habits, evoked by antecedent cues performed without reinforcer's active memory. The perhaps most clearly distinguished with reinforcer‐devaluation test: actions suppressed when reinforcer is separately devalued responding tested extinction, habitual not. But what function habit learning? Habits often thought to be strong unusually persistent. present selective review examines this idea asking whether habits identified test more resistant effects other contingency change, vulnerable relapse, weakening context or permanently place once they learned. Surprisingly little evidence supports that permanent context‐specific than goal‐directed are. Methods make behavior persistent do not necessarily work encouraging habit. learning may a but it automatic efficient particular context.

We previously reported the rapid development of habitual behavior in a discrete-trials instrumental task which lever insertion and retraction act as reward-predictive cues delineating sequence execution. Here we asked whether or performance variables reflective skill automaticity might account for male rats. Behavior habit-promoting was compared with two variants lacking sequence-delineating extension retraction. find that is under goal-directed control absence but not their presence, skilled does predict vs. behavior. Neural activity recordings revealed an engagement dorsolateral striatum disengagement dorsomedial during execution task, specifically. Abstract Habit formation is a process in which an action becomes involuntary. While goal-directed behavior driven by its consequences, habits are elicited situation rather than consequences. Existing theories have proposed that actions controlled corresponding two distinct systems. Although canonical based on such distinctions starting to be challenged, there few theoretical frameworks implement and within single system. Here, we propose novel framework hypothesizing network composed of several responses. With this framework, shown the transition caused change structure. Furthermore, confirmed model behaves manner consistent with existing experimental results reported animal behavioral studies. Our revealed habit could formed under control system By capturing as change, provides new perspective studying structure for research.
