Microbes associated with an organism can significantly modulate its susceptibility to viral infections, but our understanding of the influence individual microbes remains limited. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a model that in nature inhabits environments rich bacteria. Here, we examine impact 71 naturally bacteria on C . only known natural virus, Orsay virus. Our findings reveal infection influenced by monobacterial environments. Compared Escherichia coli environmental reference, majority tested reduced infection. This reduction not caused virion degradation or poor animal nutrition repression bacterial strains Chryseobacterium JUb44 and Sphingobacterium BIGb0172 does require RIG-I homolog DRH-1, which activate antiviral responses such as RNA interference transcriptional regulation. research highlights necessity considering biotic studies opens way future host-microbe-virus interactions.

Abstract Microplastic pollution is a topic of increasing concern for the world's oceans, freshwaters and, most recently, soils. Microplastics have been found in soils across globe. Like other anthropogenic pollutants, they can negatively affect range soil organisms through several mechanisms, though often dependent on particle size, shape and polymer type. However, microplastics are unique among pollutants due to diversity ways which may themselves be able their occurrence distribution mediate effects rest food web. In this review, we argue more explicitly ecological framing novel issue environment discuss potential interactions with communities, including microplastic formation via microbial faunal fragmentation large plastic debris such as earthworms placing particles pedological contexts could not otherwise reach. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been central to the understanding of metazoan biology. However, C. is but one species among millions and significance this important model organism will only be fully revealed if it placed in a rich evolutionary context. Global sampling efforts have led discovery over 50 putative from genus Caenorhabditis, many which await formal description. Here, we present descriptions for 10 new species. We also draft genome sequences nine these species, along with transcriptome assembly one. exploit whole-genome data reconstruct phylogeny use phylogenetic tree dissect evolution morphology genus. reveal extensive variation size investigate molecular processes that underlie variation. show unexpected complexity history key developmental pathway genes. Hawaiian isolates of the nematode species Caenorhabditis elegans have long been known to harbor genetic diversity greater than rest worldwide population, but this observation was supported by only a small number wild strains. To better characterize niche and C. other species, we sampled different substrates niches across islands. We identified hundreds new strains from oiwi. are found in cooler climates at high elevations not associated with any specific substrate, as compared species. Surprisingly, admixture analysis revealed evidence shared ancestry between some non-Hawaiian suggest that deep observed Hawaii might represent patterns ancestral before human influence.

Abstract Caenorhabditis elegans lives in a complex habitat which they routinely experience large fluctuations temperature, and encounter physical obstacles that vary size composition. Their is shared by other nematodes, beneficial harmful bacteria, nematode-trapping fungi. Not surprisingly, these nematodes can detect discriminate among diverse environmental cues, exhibit sensory-evoked behaviors are readily quantifiable the laboratory at high resolution. ability to perform depends on <100 sensory neurons, this compact nervous system together with powerful molecular genetic tools has allowed individual neuron types be linked specific responses.
