Sleep quality decreases with aging and thus sleep complaints are prevalent in older adults, particularly for those cognitive impairment dementia. For emerging evidence suggests poor increases risk of developing Given the population – impending economic burden associated increasing numbers dementia patients there is pressing need to improve among adults. As such, research efforts have increased focus on investigating association between age-related changes decline a complex construct evaluate empirically, yet Pittsburg Quality Index (PSQI) commonly used studies as their only measure quality. Furthermore, PSQI may not be best due its reliance capacity reflect past month. Further study needed determine PSQI's validity Thus, current examined 78 community dwelling adults 55+ predictive objective (as measured by actigraphy). We compared two subjective measures Consensus Diary (CSD) actigraphy (MotionWatch 8; camntech). Our results suggest perceived quite different from reality, at least 55+. Importantly, we show this difference unrelated age, gender, education, or status (assessed using standard screens). Previous shown valuable tool assessing quality; however, our findings indicate should substitute actigraphy, vice versa. Hence, conclude practice include both when examining (i.e., PSQI, CSD,

Ocular light exposure has important influences on human health and well-being through modulation of circadian rhythms sleep, as well neuroendocrine cognitive functions. Prevailing patterns do not optimally engage these actions for many individuals, but advances in our understanding the underpinning mechanisms emerging lighting technologies now present opportunities to adjust promote optimal physical mental performance. A newly developed, international standard provides a SI-compliant way quantifying influence intrinsically photosensitive, melanopsin-expressing, retinal neurons that mediate effects. The report recommendations lighting, based an expert scientific consensus expressed easily measured quantity (melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (melaponic EDI)) defined within this standard. are supported by detailed analysis sensitivity circadian, neuroendocrine, alerting responses ocular provide straightforward framework inform design practice.

Consideration is being given to the adoption of a new metric characterizing light as it affects human circadian system. Much has been learned over past couple decades about stimulus for system regulation, so appropriate that these discussions take place. The present paper develops an argument adopting quantifying in architectural spaces. (a) was developed from several lines biophysical research, including those basic retinal neurophysiology; (b) validated controlled experiments; and (c) used successfully number real-world applications. Any metrics should each foundational points into consideration.

Visible light synchronizes the human biological clock in suprachiasmatic nuclei of hypothalamus to solar 24-hour cycle. Short wavelengths, perceived as blue color, are strongest synchronizing agent for circadian system that keeps most and psychological rhythms internally synchronized. Circadian rhythm is important optimum function organisms sleep-wake disruptions or chronic misalignment often may lead psychiatric neurodegenerative illness. The beneficial effect on synchronization, sleep quality, mood, cognitive performance depends not only spectral composition but also timing exposure its intensity. Exposure during day suppress melatonin secretion, hormone produced by pineal gland plays crucial role entrainment. While keeping organism's wellbeing, alertness, day, low-intensity directly before bedtime, have serious implications phase cycle durations. This rises inevitably need solutions improve today's modern society where emitting devices ever increasing.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF, animal-based studies) and time-restricted eating (TRE, humans) are an emerging behavioral intervention approach based on the understanding of role circadian rhythms in physiology metabolism. In this approach, all calorie intake is restricted within a consistent interval less than 12 hours without overtly attempting to reduce calories. This article will summarize origin TRF/TRE starting with concept chronic rhythm disruption increasing risk for metabolic diseases. Circadian usually perceived as sleep-wake cycle dependent arising from central nervous system. However, recent discovery peripheral organs plasticity these response changes nutrition availability raised possibility that adopting daily short window can sustain robust rhythm. Preclinical animal studies have demonstrated proof identified potential mechanisms driving TRF-related benefits. Pilot human reported promising results reducing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular Epidemiological indicated maintaining long overnight fast, which similar TRE, significantly risks Despite early successes, more clinical mechanistic needed implement TRE alone or adjuvant lifestyle prevention management

Light profoundly affects our mental and physical health. In particular, light, when not delivered at the appropriate time, may have detrimental effects. mammals, light is perceived only by rods cones but also a subset of retinal ganglion cells that express photopigment melanopsin renders them intrinsically photosensitive (ipRGCs). ipRGCs participate in contrast detection play critical roles non-image-forming vision, set responses include circadian entrainment, pupillary reflex (PLR), modulation sleep/alertness, mood. are found human retina, their response to has been characterized indirectly through suppression nocturnal melatonin PLR. However, until recently, had rarely investigated directly. This gap progressively being filled as, over last years, an increasing number studies provided descriptions morphology, gene expression. Here, I review progress knowledge ipRGCs, different morphological functional subtypes described so far how they match murine subtypes. highlight questions remain be addressed. Additionally, display increased vulnerability or resilience certain disorders compared conventional RGCs, deeper function could help identify therapeutic approaches develop diagnostic tools. Disruption of circadian rhythms, provoked by artificial lighting at night, inconsistent sleep-wake schedules, and transmeridian air travel, is increasingly prevalent in modern society. Desynchrony biological rhythms from environmental light cycles has dramatic consequences for human health. In particular, disrupting homeostatic oscillations endocrine tissues the hormones that these regulate can have cascading effects on physiology behavior. Accumulating evidence suggests chronic disruption organization function may lead to metabolic, reproductive, sleep, mood disorders. This review discusses control systems distorting rhythmicity systems.

Daylight stems solely from direct, scattered and reflected sunlight, undergoes dynamic changes in irradiance spectral power composition due to latitude, time of day, year the nature physical environment (reflections, buildings vegetation). Humans their ancestors evolved under these natural day/night cycles over millions years. Electric light, a relatively recent invention, interacts competes with light–dark cycle impact human biology. What are consequences living industrialised urban areas much less daylight more use electric throughout day (and at night), on general health quality life? In this workshop report, we have classified key gaps knowledge research into three main groups: (I) uncertainty as quantity needed for “optimal” physiological psychological functioning, (II) lack consensus practical measurement assessment methods tools monitoring real (day) light exposure across multiple scales, (III) insufficient integration exchange bases different disciplines. Crucial short long-term objectives fill proposed.
