Many experience sampling (ESM) studies suggested that high resilience is reflected by quickly recovering one's emotional baseline. However, former relied on coarse data and did not look into differential recovery from ups downs. This preregistered proof-of-concept study therefore used high-resolution collected in 2022 to compute after levels of positive versus negative emotions. Adults (N = 68) participated a three-week ESM with eight assessments per day, complemented short-spaced burst assessments. Resilience was assessed at baseline (trait-level; TR) daily (day-level; DR). Multilevel survival analyses showed DR predicted faster returns emotions, but also delayed following emotions (exp(β) 1.32, p 0.006). Instead, TR relate 0.85, 0.067). These findings were generally robust across different sensitivity analyses. illustrates how innovative designs combined time-to-event may further our insight the timescale which it unfolds.

Abstract Network approaches to psychopathology have become increasingly common in mental health research, with many theoretical and methodological developments quickly gaining traction. This article illustrates contemporary practices applying network analytical tools, bridging the gap between concepts their empirical applications. We explain how we can use graphs construct networks representing complex associations among observable psychological variables. then discuss key models, including dynamic networks, time‐varying models derived from panel data, intervention analysis, latent moderated models. In addition, Bayesian role causal inference a focus on cross‐sectional data. After presenting different methods, theories meaningfully inform each other. conclude discussion that summarizes insights technique provide research.

Measuring subjective experiences in Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) studies has become a popular research design. A key design choice such is the response scale of survey questions. Typically, researchers choose between Likert and visual analog (VAS). However, there little guidance on this choice. We conducted between-person experiment comparing 7-point (N=73) with VAS (N=65) an EMA study measuring affective states over 14 days. Using Bayesian multilevel models, we found that compared to scale, resulted moderately higher within-person item means, lag-0 correlations, lag-1 autocorrelations, as well lower skewnesses frequencies exact zeros. largest difference correlations external criteria related psychopathology, where for were much higher. did not observe reliable differences variances, root mean squared successive differences, missing data, duration measurements, ratings about survey. Apart from means group, relatively small. While more scales needed, based our results conclude should be preferred aiming at capturing relating general items whose variation occurs close limits. by discussing how findings may contribute larger agenda addresses fit different aims.

The ability to measure emotional states in daily life using mobile devices has led a surge of exciting new research on the temporal evolution emotions. However, much potential these data still remains untapped. In this paper, we re-analyze emotion measurements from seven openly available Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) studies with total 835 individuals systematically investigate modality (unimodal, bimodal, more than two modes) and skewness within-person measurements. We show that both multimodality are highly prevalent. addition, quantify heterogeneity across items, individuals, measurement designs. Our analysis reveals is likely an analogue slider scale Likert scale; negatively valenced items consistently skewed positive items; longer time series higher degree skew negative items. end by discussing implications our results for theorizing, measurement, modeling.

Multilevel Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models have become a popular tool for analyzing time series data from multiple subjects. Many studies aim to investigate differences in multilevel VAR between groups, such as patients and healthy controls. However, there is currently no easily applicable method make inferences about group differences. Here, we present two standard tests making inferences: parametric test nonparametric permutation test. We explain the rationale both tests, provide an implementation based on R-package mlVAR, evaluate their performance recovering scenarios resembling empirical research using simulation study. Finally, fully reproducible R-tutorial testing dataset of emotion measures new mnet.

Psychological science is divided into two distinct methodological traditions. One tradition seeks to understand how people function at the individual level, while other differ from each other. Methodologies that have grown out of these traditions typically rely on different sources data. While both use statistical models structure data, and are often similar, Molenaar (2004) showed results one type analysis rarely transfer other, unless unrealistic assumptions hold. This raises question we may integrate approaches. In this paper, argue formalized theories can be used connect intra- interindividual levels analysis. connection indirect, in sense relationship between theory data best understood through intermediate level phenomena: robust patterns empirical To illustrate this, introduce a distinction phenomena, many psychological will implications for types phenomena. Characterizing psychological processes as dynamical systems has become a common practice in psychology. Most often, theories are expressed verbal terms and then interpreted by researchers their operationalization. In contrast, can also be formally mathematical or computational terms. However, translating of into formal theories, especially those represented differential equations (DEs), often requires knowledge physics mathematics beyond the standard training received psychologists. this article, we seek to provide roadmap for who wish build theory DEs from theory. We use running example illustrate various steps end with discussion on caveats formalizing using DE models. Our aims at phase development refinement, before researcher collects data. discuss different applications corresponding examples interested further reading.
