Calf management is important for the development, health, and welfare of animals. In this follow-up study, we evaluated calf practices on dairy farms in Austria using an online questionnaire 2021 2022. We tested hypothesis that farmers changed their farm within these 10 years. The total number analyzable surveys 2022 was 2,314. All variables significantly between Therefore, were chosen randomly by controlling confounding changes herd size (number cows), type (conventional vs. organic), cows' barn (freestall tiestall). From 2012 to 2022, median cows per increased from 20 (interquartile range [IQR] 13 30) 22 (IQR 35), percentage organic-producing 23.9% (2012) 30.6% (2022). offering colostrum 4 h after birth 83.7% 87.2%. This change significant when subsampling performed. quantity first offered newborns mainly 2 L (69%), with less than (13.3% 18.3%). testing quality objective method (hydrometer, Brix refractometer, outflow funnel) 4.9-fold 9.4% On most (88.8% 86.6% respectively), calves housed individually birth. A higher reported grouping at earlier age 2012. both years, whole milk fed (85.1% 86.3%). where nonsalable or waste decreased 84.0% 74.1%. Milk allowance nonsignificantly. Subsampling revealed weaning health problem diarrhea (in 59.8% farms, >10% calves; 27.4%, >25%), followed respiratory tract disease 39.8% 16.4%, >25%). Compared 2012, a stated they had incidence (39.8% 59.8%). our weak points regarding not enough colostrum, missing quality, housing socially weeks postnatum, feeding restricted amounts milk. mortality rate 3% 1 5) increasing also show need improvement. Thus, how get motivated implement accordance science-based recommendations remains open question.

Colostrum is important for supplying the bovine neonate with nutrients, bioactive substances, and immunoglobulins to acquire passive immunity. Trypsin inhibitory activity represents a general characteristic of first colostrum. It assumed that anti-trypsin serves protect molecules in colostrum from being digested by calf. The objectives study were establish test determine hypothesis freezing, acidification, heat treatment alter compared untreated A photometric assay was established activity. expressed milligrams inhibited trypsin per milliliter Anti-trypsin measured colostrum, frozen (-20°C 24 h), acidified using 10% formic acid way it present as 1% sample, treated according 2 different protocols (60°C 60 min 63.5°C 30 min). In our study, inhibition 40 samples (0.80 mg/mL, SEM 0.03) corresponded observed (0.79 0.03). these analyzed 59 extra (in total 99 samples), (0.85 0.01) subjected acidification (0.84 0.01), at 60°C (0.65 0.02), (0.61 0.02). Acidification did not significantly affect inhibition. Both reduced future, when investigating effects postharvest storage processing on influence should be evaluated addition other components.

Colostrum plays a crucial role in the passive transfer of immunity (PTI) calves. The quality and quantity colostrum have significant impact on PTI. objective this study was to assess dairy farms different sizes. A total 660 samples were obtained from 28 11 provinces Türkiye. divided into five groups according size: Group I (1–100, n = 26), II (101–200, 37), III (201–500, 200), IV (501–1000, 235), V (> 1000, 162). assessed by Brix refractometer (≤ 22% indicates poor colostrum) evaluated statistically. mean Brix% 27.74 ± 0.14. Groups I–V 24.04 0.72, 25.70 0.93, 28.11 0.26, 28.46 0.23 27.30 0.21, respectively. rate for cows 8.03%, it 34.61%, 29.72%, 6.0%, 5.53% 4.93%, rates primiparity 65.38%, 54.05%, 49.0%, 35.31% 43.2%, significantly ( P 0.014) lower primiparous (27.08 0.23) than multiparous (28.25 0.18). highest found II. This situation small may be due inadequate management feeding.
