The
Tri-County
Detroit
Area
(TCDA)
is
the
12th
most
populous
metropolitan
area
in
United
States
with
over
three
million
people.
Multiple
communicable
diseases
are
endemic
TCDA.
In
2017,
to
explore
innovative
methods
that
may
provide
early
warnings
of
outbreaks
affecting
populations
TCDA,
an
exploratory
partnership
was
funded
by
a
U.S.
National
Science
Foundation
Early-concept
Grant
for
Exploratory
Research
(EAGER)
began.
Since
project
team
including
College
Engineering
at
Michigan
State
University
(MSU),
City
Detroit,
Great
Lakes
Water
Authority
(GLWA),
industry,
and
local
government
health
departments,
has
been
testing
municipal
wastewater
from
TCDA
survey
predict
surges
area.
This
ongoing
effort
started
years
before
wastewater-based
epidemiology
became
widespread
method
public
practice,
due
COVID-19
pandemic,
now
supported
Centers
Disease
Control
Prevention
(CDC).

Abstract
In
July
2022,
an
unvaccinated
young
adult
living
in
Rockland
County,
New
York
became
paralyzed
due
to
a
vaccine-derived
poliovirus
type
2
(VDPV2)
infection
that
was
internationally
transmitted.
Wastewater
surveillance
State
uncovered
VDPV2
neighboring
counties,
showing
silent
community
spread.
These
communities
have
strong
epidemiological
links
some
vaccine-hesitant
Canada,
spurring
the
need
monitor
these
populations
for
potential
importation.
At
time,
Canada
did
not
established
wastewater
method.
We
initiated
this
study
apply
molecular
methods
detect
and
establish
capabilities
