The electrochemical properties of chars have been recently described, positioning as active participants in microbial redox processes through functional groups, aromatic structures, redox-active metals, and radicals. While bench-scale studies advanced mechanistic understanding char's behavior potential effects, translating these findings to complex ecosystems remains challenging. This is mainly due the complexities communities unique various ecosystems. Factors like char aging patina formation, environmental parameters including oxygen moisture availability, pH, organic matter content can significantly affect interactions. highlights need for a broader predict effectively manage unintended impacts or enhance beneficial effects. Long-term monitoring systems amended with also needed determine whether accumulation has long-term effects on ecosystem services, biogeochemical cycling. Predictive would inform production such increased soil productivity, provide new opportunities engineered remediation. Here, we summarize how well-defined discuss key factors that are enhanced attenuated systems. We identify critical knowledge gaps about chars' role important sustainability postulate managing properties, electron donating, accepting, conducting ability, an emerging opportunity influence services.

Abstract The biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in soil is very challenging due to the complex recalcitrant nature hydrocarbon, hydrophobicity, indigenous microbial adaptation and competition, harsh environmental conditions. This work further confirmed that limited natural attenuation hydrocarbons (TPHs) (15% removal) necessitates efficient bioremediation strategies. Hence, a scaling-up experiment for testing optimizing use biopiles TPH polluted soils was conducted with three 500-kg pilots soil, respective treatments were implemented: including control (CT), bioaugmentation vermicompost treatment (BAVC), combined application BAVC along bioelectrochemical snorkels (BESBAVC), all maintained at 40% field capacity. study identified pilot scale level, successful can achieve 90.3% removal after 90 days. BAVC’s effectiveness stemmed from synergistic mechanisms. Introduced consortia capable degradation, while provided essential nutrients, enhanced aeration, and, potentially, acted as biosorbent. it be concluded significantly enhances compared attenuation. While snorkel (BES) also showed significant removal, did not differ statistically individual BAVC, under applied Further research needed optimize BES integration broader applicability. demonstrates scalable mechanistically sound approach soil.

Modern industrialization has high demand for dyes to impart better color cosmetic, paper, textile and pharmaceutical industry. Dyes are of several kinds depending on the base their chromophore groups, chemical structures, methods application substrate, dissociation properties in aqueous solution. The wastewater created during dyeing process, application, operation contains residual dyes, mordants, organic inorganic contaminants, which having drastic negative effect valuable environment its living creatures. Various technologies needed absolute degradation before safely discharge effluents. Among them, physiochemical mostly used but not friendly cost-effective producing secondary hazards that required further treatment. So, there is a growing alternative budget-friendly biological approaches involve use microbes, fungi, algae, plants. These techniques such as biosorption, biodegradation, biomineralization. This chapter discusses different types using microorganisms.
