Active participation in the global value chains (GVC) has been recognized as an important factor curbing growth of carbon emissions. However, how GVC embedment affects emissions economies and what are pathways its impact need to be further studied. This paper analyzes mechanism affecting embodied exports (CEEE) selects 17 manufacturing industries 36 around world for empirical testing. It is found that significantly reduces CEEE. Specifically, a suppressive effect on CEEE both developed developing countries, former greater than latter; low-tech negative but not conducive reduction high-tech industries; complex forward have higher effects compared with simple backward embedment. More importantly, through energy conservation effect, structure transfer all them show significant inverted U-shaped mediation effect. The findings this implications sustainable economic development under division labor system.

A comprehensive assessment of the environmental and employment impacts international trade is essential for coordinating sustainable development between economy, environment, society. International an important driving force global economic growth. However, social under value chains (GVCs) have not yet been comprehensively characterized. This study aims to estimate from 2000–2014 on carbon emissions using gross export decomposition method, incorporating a counterfactual method based multi-region input–output model. We found that (1) at level, has conducive emission reductions since 2003 played role in increasing throughout period; however, GVC-related mixed, generating savings, but leading job losses. implies there trade-off reduction through GVC embedding creation. (2) At national country’s participation benefits employment, or both. In this sense, no longer zero-sum game; rather, it likely be positive-sum game all participants regarding (3) bilateral trade, developed developing economies positive negative impacts, meaning they should take joint actions balance environment–employment–trade These findings are useful determining responsibilities different countries toward climate change achieving society, environment.

Scientifically judging the environmental effects of embedding in global value chain (GVC) has important theoretical significance and practical value, especially for emerging economies, but there are few studies on relationship between GVC embedment pollution economies. Based classical theory Grossman, this study analyzed mechanism framework then used panel data 16 economies from 1998 to 2019 empirical tests. After using FGLS regression model a series tests, main conclusions as follows. (1) The impact includes five effects. scale effect brings about expansion production activities increases emission pollutants. technological refers improvements level clean technology, which brought by acquisition acceptance “technology spillover” chain. structural is reduction pollutant emissions improvement environment through economic upgrading. income “demand push” improve reduce triggered an increase national income. lock-in means that leaders hinder achieving high-level upgrades, intending lock them into links with relatively high pollution. These not static interlinked affect each other. (2) results show initially negative environment, deepening embedment, will decrease; is, it shows inverted U-shaped relationship. (3) density energy use, share fossil fuels, per capita positively correlated pollution, while population manufacturing negatively correlated. This also provides suggestions how process future.

Research background: The issue of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, recognized as one the major drivers environmental degradation, has attracted considerable attention from academic researchers, policymakers, and professionals in relevant fields. Based on existing research, countries’ pollution levels are shaped by a combination factors, including their participation global value chains (GVCs) degree technological advancement. Still, relatively little is known about mutual interdependence these factors determining CO2 which creates research gap that we address this paper. Purpose article: aim study to broaden understanding impact GVC involvement emissions emerging developing countries. We examine conditional country’s distance world’s frontier. rationale advancement may underpin participation. claim adoption technology less developed countries via GVCs conditioned absorptive capacity, determined initial level development. Methods: To investigate issue, employ Arellano-Bond generalized method moments (GMM) estimator four patent-based indicators. utilized data cover 90 Findings & added: Our demonstrates key factor conditions acquisition benefits find with shorter distances frontier enjoy decline increases. At same time, further away leader not be able experience reduction increased integration due inadequate hampers related diffusion through GVCs.

Global value chain (GVC) embedding is a “Double-edged sword”. While the countries along “Belt and Road” benefit from dividends brought by GVC embedding, environmental pollution caused industrial production becomes increasingly severe due to lack of core technology weak research development (R&D) capability. Environmental performance can comprehensively reflect cleaner level industry considering interaction various input factors. With deepening in Road”, it essential improve perspective embedding. Based on sector data 15 during period 2007 2020, impacts are empirically examined this study using feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) panel threshold model. The findings could shed light emission reduction measures through for countries. Specifically, results manifest that: 1) increase forward promotes performance, while backward has an inhibitory effect. 2) impact position shows evident effect with respect intensity regulation. In other words, when country’s regulation rises continuously crosses value, upgrade will promote performance. 3) heterogeneous. From cross-border times added simple inhibits complex promotive. time heterogeneity, implementation Initiative changed inhibition promotion. end, paper provides policy implications establish green low-carbon circular system achieve goal clean production.
