soundscape

animals

Abstract
Animals
that
communicate
by
acoustic
signaling
share
a
common
environment.
Birds
are
particularly
vocal
examples,
using
wide
repertoire
of
broadcast
signals
for
mate
attraction
and
territorial
defense.
However,
interference
caused
sounds
overlap
in
frequency
time
can
disrupt
signal
detection
reduce
reproductive
success.
Here,
we
investigated
competition
avoidance
mechanisms
used
the
bird
community
inhabiting
primeval
lowland
temperate
forest
Białowieża,
Eastern
Poland.
We
recorded
dawn
chorus
at
84
locations
early
late
spring
calculated
dissimilarity
indices
to
examine
how
species
with
greater
song
similarities
use
spatial
temporal
partitioning
avoid
space
throughout
breeding
season.
