Abstract Animals that communicate by acoustic signaling share a common environment. Birds are particularly vocal examples, using wide repertoire of broadcast signals for mate attraction and territorial defense. However, interference caused sounds overlap in frequency time can disrupt signal detection reduce reproductive success. Here, we investigated competition avoidance mechanisms used the bird community inhabiting primeval lowland temperate forest Białowieża, Eastern Poland. We recorded dawn chorus at 84 locations early late spring calculated dissimilarity indices to examine how species with greater song similarities use spatial temporal partitioning avoid space throughout breeding season. The changed its day did not when looked recording over whole study period, but they seasonal context, more acoustically different than expected chance same point part Our results also indicate daily niche may only occur certain times before sunrise, no evidence large-scale between vocalizing during 1-min recordings daytime. These contribute toward our understanding evolution communication highlight strategies employed improve their transmission.

Marine ecosystems are increasingly subjected to anthropogenic pressures, which demands urgent monitoring plans. Understanding soundscapes can offer unique insights into the ocean status providing important information and revealing different sounds their sources. Fishes be prominent soundscape contributors, making passive acoustic (PAM) a potential tool detect presence of vocal fish species monitor changes in biodiversity. The major goal this research was provide first reference marine Madeira Archipelago focusing on sounds, as basis for long-term PAM program. Based literature, 102 potentially 35 were identified. Additionally 43 putative sound types detected audio recordings from two protected areas (MPAs) Archipelago: Garajau MPA Desertas MPA. exhibited higher activity, greater variety diversity. Lower abundance found at night both MPAs. Acoustic activity revealed clear distinction between diurnal nocturnal groups demonstrated daily patterns suggesting temporal spectral partitioning space. Pomacentridae proposed candidates some dominant during day, while scorpionfishes (Scorpaena spp.) sources sounds. This study provides an baseline about community behaviour is valuable steppingstone future non-invasive cost-effective programs Madeira.

The rise in species richness with area is one of the few ironclad ecological relationships. Yet, little known about spatial scaling alternative dimensions diversity. Here, we provide empirical evidence for a relationship between acoustic traits emanating from landscape, or soundscape richness, and island area, which term SoundScape-Area Relationship (SSAR). We show positive gamma area. This breaks down at smallest scales, indicating small-island effect. Moreover, demonstrate plot-scale alpha but not beta turnover, suggesting direct effect on trait conclude that general biodiversity can be extended into realm ecoacoustics, implying metrics are sensitive to fundamental patterns useful disentangling their complex mechanistic drivers.

Organisms use multi-modal, scale-dependent, sensory information to decipher their surroundings. This can include, for example, recognizing the presence of con- or heterospecifics, including a predatory threat, and abundance prey, navigational cues travel between breeding feeding areas. Here we advocate concept active space understand extent which an individual might be sending receiving habitat information, describing this as component niche space. We present means ecological interactions, giving focus those species whose is acoustically defined, in particular, cetacean species. show how application estimates space, changes extent, help better potential disturbance effects soundscape, useful metric estimate possible adverse even when stress responses, behavioral calling modifications are not obvious.

Acoustic signals are of critical importance to songbirds which rely on them for mate attraction and territorial defence. Interference caused by sounds that overlap in frequency time can disturb or mask signal detection. While species differ their song spectral properties, duration composition, the limited acoustic space may lead evolution behavioural strategies aimed at minimizing competition. Using playback experiments we tested whether tropical forest use temporal avoidance reduce competition space. We focused two with different ranges: green-backed camaroptera, Camaroptera brachyura, a broad-spectrum song, scaly-breasted illadopsis, Illadopsis albipectus, produces narrow-spectrum song. found illadopsis avoided both overlap. By contrast, there was no difference number songs produced between periods silence noise. However, when varied noise, camaroptera increased rate during playbacks noise maximal overlap, suggesting increasing redundancy. Our results show be specific could related range species.

The scaly crickets, Mogoplistinae, form a monophyletic group of crickets and are characterised by scales covering the integument. In many species, males have modified forewings for producing highly tonal calling songs. Despite being speciose abundant orthopterans in tropical forests, data on their songs studies bioacoustics remain scanty. this study, we recorded described seven sympatric cricket species belonging to three genera—Cycloptiloides, Ectatoderus Ornebius—from Singapore. We compared call structure parameters syntopic occurring together same locality within Singapore found that congeners exhibit acoustic partitioning avoid inter-specific competition space. also can be varied among from groups. Finally, observed syllable duration peak frequency vastly different allometric relationships with body size. Larger bear disproportionately longer duration, but not differences frequency.

Acoustic communication among birds plays an important role in attracting mates and defending territories. For the successful transmission of songs, individuals different species often avoid singing at same time to reduce acoustic interference from background noise overlapping signals heterospecifics. Such behavioural niche partitioning may occur especially closely related due their ecological similarities. In this study, we recorded bird sounds a subtropical forest China May–June 2019 detected seven cuckoo species. Extracting characteristics calls, found that only four 21 pairs overlapped frequency range, 19 were classified accurately using linear discriminant analysis classifier based on features. The remaining two could be separated temporal or spatial distribution patterns. We also analysed patterns overlap finding exhibit least one three dimensions (site, frequency, activity time). conclude sympatric strongly partitioned signal space minimally masked each other's signals.
