ABSTRACT
Global
microplastic
(MP)
pollution
is
now
well
recognized,
with
humans
and
animals
consuming
inhaling
MPs
on
a
daily
basis.
Herein
we
described
the
effects
of
azide-free,
1
µm
polystyrene
MP
beads
co-delivered
into
lungs
SARS-CoV-2
omicron
BA.5
inoculum
using
mouse
model
mild
COVID-19.
Lung
virus
titres
viral
RNA
levels
were
not
significantly
affected
by
MPs,
overt
clinical
or
histopathological
changes
also
observed.
However,
RNA-Seq
infected
revealed
that
exposure
suppressed
innate
immune
responses
at
2
days
post
infection
(dpi)
increased
pro-inflammatory
signatures
6
dpi.
The
cytokine
profile
dpi
showed
significant
correlation
‘cytokine
release
syndrome’
signature
seen
in
some
severe
COVID-19
patients.
This
study
adds
to
growing
body
literature
suggesting

The
presence
of
microplastics
(MPs)
is
increasing
at
a
dramatic
rate
globally,
posing
risks
for
exposure
and
subsequent
potential
adverse
effects
on
human
health.
Apart
from
being
physical
objects,
MP
particles
contain
thousands
plastic-associated
chemicals
(i.e.,
monomers,
chemical
additives,
non-intentionally
added
substances)
captured
within
the
polymer
matrix.
These
are
often
migrating
MPs
can
be
found
in
various
environmental
matrices
food
chains;
health
effects.
In
addition
to
attributes
MPs,
plastic
surfaces
effectively
bind
exogenous
chemicals,
including
pollutants
(e.g.,
heavy
metals,
persistent
organic
pollutants).
Therefore,
act
as
vectors
pollution
across
air,
drinking
water,
food,
further
amplifying

by
exposure.

emerged

widely

AM
technologies

microplastics

Emerging
evidence

exposures

environment
are
overlooked
drivers

cardiovascular
diseases
(CVD).
Recent
suggests
micro-

nanoplastic
(MNP)
particles
derived
largely
from

mechanical

represent
a
novel
CVD
risk
factor.
Experimental
data
preclinical
models
suggest
MNPs
can
foster
oxidative
stress,
platelet
aggregation,

senescence,
inflammatory
responses

cells

promoting

to
disease

death.
