A new maritime spatial plan for the German EEZ has come into force in 2021, replacing first plans North Sea and Baltic dating back to 2009. This paper discusses key changes plan, highlighting how it adapted changing circumstances demands within existing framework of planning legislation. While regulatory instruments available MSP have remained unchanged, we find that understanding become more complex, not least response EU MSPD. More uses activities been allocated priority reservation areas there is innovation use overlapping, temporary conditional areas. Changes are also apparent process which closely interlinked with SEA process. Nonetheless, highlight challenges still needs navigate. These relate rapid expansion offshore wind farming, inclusion climate change MSP, application ecosystem approach, as well transparency final stages

Ocean literacy influences ocean conservation and might have an impact on sustainable development practices. We investigated the knowledge American adults possess concerning principles behaviors by asking participants (N=1226) to complete online survey principles, health well-being benefits of time spent in or ocean, emotions that result behavioral change for conservation, actions. used a representative sample US population age, gender, location. The majority were aware principle, supports great diversity life ecosystems (82%). Calmness, stress reduction, reduced depression, awe, connection with nature, greater satisfaction, improved happiness, feeling spiritual refuge all associated environment’s emotional benefits. Monthly beach trips physical spending near ocean. Engagement action was multiple factors, including awareness (the is largely unexplored, human are connected, regulates our climate weather), monthly visits sadness living 10 miles less viewing nature documentaries Instagram. Findings from this study may provide ideas how engage public understanding, valuing, caring shared sustaining

Understanding the multiple benefits (i.e. Ecosystem Services, ES) that marine habitats provide to society is key for adequate decision-making maintains our well-being in long-term. The main objective of this research was map and assess, context spatial planning, ES supply shallow deep-sea Canary Islands across biological zones substrate types. An ES-matrix developed through a literature review evaluate potential, complemented with habitats' total extension assess capacity each resulting ES. matrix linked 34 relation 42 ES, over ca. 485,000 km2. Cultural were most abundant archipelago. On average, supplied potentially 25 compared 17 by habitats. This likely be explained limitations regarding available information suggesting both provisioning potential underestimated. analysis showed particularly certain regulating maintenance services may at risk face habitat degradation. Results enabled extrapolation already existing monetization, e.g. those accounted Cymodocea nodosa generating 25,633,919 € y-1 Islands. study provided first comprehensive assessment Islands, filling regional knowledge gap. enables accounting previously overlooked region, strengthening idea coastal communities' small islands depends on their ecosystems. Finally, results discussed applicability planning protected area design informing large societal when allocating maritime activities spatially.
