There are two major problems that we facing currently. Firstly, a growing human population continues to contribute the increased food demand. Secondly, volume of organic waste produced will threaten health and quality environment. Recently, there is an increasing number efforts placed into farming insect biomass produce alternative feed ingredients. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), Hermetia illucens have proven convert high-quality nutrients for pet foods, fish poultry feeds, as well residue fertilizer soil amendment. However, better BSFL formulation feeding approaches necessary yielding higher nutrient content body, if performed efficiently, whilst converting value biomass. Lastly, this paper reveals BSFL, in fact, thrives various ranges matter composition with simple rearing systems.

In East Africa, insect farming is a rapidly growing business providing access to 'climate-smart' protein, other nutrients, and income. With the continental drive transform existing food systems that are becoming continuously unsustainable due scarcity of arable land water, high ecological imprint, for feed with circular economy potential has gained remarkable interest. this review, we report on recent research trends key substrates species commonly farmed, map commercial enterprises, nutritional values, processing techniques, marketing, regulatory framework, lessons learnt farming. These findings provide important answers both technical economic factors clear roadmap scaling these technologies in phased approach through effective public-private partnerships offering interesting opportunities implementing economy.

Over two hundred billion black soldier flies (BSF, Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae)) are reared annually across the globe, with industry projected to grow substantially in coming decade. Black being actively explored globe for use as livestock feed; fishmeal replacements; biodiesel; human, animal, and food waste management; even sustainable human protein. Despite huge number of individual insects interest BSF welfare by numerous producers academics, there is no paper that considers species-specific farmed conditions. We review factors relate commercial rearing facilities, including: diseases/parasites, abiotic conditions (temperature, humidity/moisture, substrate aeration, light, pupation substrates, adult spatial needs), larval nutritional considerations, injury crowding, handling-associated stress, selective breeding genetic modification, environmental contaminants, slaughter methods. conclude a discussion most pressing concerns industry, recommendations altering give rise them, suggestions future research directions would lend valuable insights welfare. While this summary BSF-centric, core topic animal applies all insect models currently, or future, produced feed.

Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is a promising insect species to use as novel ingredient in fish feeds. larvae consists of three major fractions, namely protein, lipid, and exoskeleton. These fractions contain bioactive compounds that can modulate the gut microbiota such antimicrobial peptides, lauric acid, chitin. However, it not certain how, or which black solider would affect fish. In present study, were processed into different meals (full-fat, defatted de-chitinized) two (oil exoskeleton), included diets for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). pre-smolts fed with these comparison commercial-like control diet eight weeks investigate effects on composition predicted metabolic capacity microbiota. The was profiled by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, capacities determined using genome-scale models.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) can convert a variety of organic wastes into biomass, and its gut microbiota are involved in this process. However, the role microbes nutrient metabolism BSFL is unclear. In study, germ-free (GF) gnotobiotic (GB) were evaluated high-protein artificial diet model. We used 16S rDNA sequencing, ITS1 network analysis to study that degrade proteins. The protein reduction rate GB group was significantly higher (increased by 73.44%) than GF group. activity proteinases, such as trypsin peptidase, abundances different microbes, including Pseudomonas spp., Orbus spp. Campylobacter strongly correlated with amino acid metabolic pathways. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are considered a commercially viable solution for global organic waste problems. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility rearing BSFL on wide range low-value streams and its potential transform them into high-quality animal feed fertilizer. Six different origins were selected each tested in triplicate. Several parameters analysed: growth performance, reduction index (WRI), conversion efficiency (ECI) larval composition. Frass composition also analysed. Larvae reared fast food (FFW) had highest ECI WRI lowest values when pig manure slurry mixed with silage grass (PMLSG) slaughter (SW). protein content found mushroom stems (MS) although substrate content. Moreover, frass nutritional profile proportionally related substrate's profile: protein-rich (SW) resulted low-protein protein-poor frass. same true lipid In conclusion, showed that can be successfully affect chemical compositions.

Bioconversion using insects is a promising strategy to convert organic waste (catering leftovers, harvest waste, food processing byproducts, etc.) into biomass that can be used for multiple applications, turned high added-value products, and address environmental, societal economic concerns. Due its ability feed on tremendous variety of wastes, the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) has recently emerged as insect bioconversion wastes an industrial scale. A growing number studies have highlighted pivotal role gut microbiota in performance health this species. This review aims provide critical overview current knowledge regarding functional diversity H. illucens, highlighting importance bioconversion, safety development new biotechnological tools. After providing different strategies been outline microbial communities we discuss these microbes beneficial services they their host. Emphasis placed technical aspects host biology require special attention near future research. We also argue singular digestive capabilities complex illucens make species valuable model addressing fundamental questions interactions evolved with microorganisms. By proposing avenues research, stimulate research challenges but bacterial symbiosis insects.
